副詞 else 用法小議

1. 表示“別的”“其他的”，主要用法如下：

(1) 用于much, little, all (=everything) 等之后。如：

Not much else is known. 其他的不太很清楚。

There’s little else we can do now. 現在我們幾乎沒什么別的事可做了。

If all else fails, you may be advised to have an operation. 如果其他手段都不見效的話，可能建議你動手術。

(2) 用于以 -one, -body, -thing, -where 結尾的詞之后。如：

Nobody else said anything. 再沒有人說什么。

Mangan has nothing else. 曼根沒有別的東西了。

She sings better than anyone else in her class. 她在班里唱得最好。

In that case someone else will come. 如是這樣，會有別人來的。

This ring cannot be bought anywhere else. 這只戒指是在其他地方所買不到的。

We went to the cinema and nowhere else. 我們去電影院了，沒到別的什么地方去。

(3) 用于who, what, where等疑問詞之后。如：

Who else was at the party? 晚會上還有誰?

What else have you bought? 你還買了些什么?

Where else did you go? 你還到什么地方去了?

注意，else 通常不放在 which 之后。順例說一句，else可與where構成一個新的副詞elsewhere，意為“在別處”“到別處”。如：

She may have been sent to work elsewhere. 她可能被派到別處工作去了。

Such a thing wouldn’t have happened elsewhere. 這樣事在別處是不會發生的。

另外，else 一般也不用在 whose 之后，遇此情況可用 who else’s。如：

Who else’s fault could it be? 這會是其他什么人的錯嗎?

但若 who else’s 后不接名詞，有時也可用 whose else。如：

I don’t know who else’s [whose else] it could be. 我不知道那是別的什么人的。

2. else可以有所有格形式（else’s），主要用于指人的復合不定代詞之后。如：

Nobody else said anything. 再沒有人說什么。

Did you see anybody else 你見到其他人了嗎?

I’m going somewhere else this evening. 今晚我去另一個地方。

He plays better than everybody else in the team. 在這個隊里，數他最強。

If you want to go anywhere else, let me know. 你要到別的地方去，就要告訴我。

3. 與 or 連用，表示“否則”，“要不然”。如：

Run or else you’ll be late. 快跑，要不你就會遲到了。

Let’s go, or else we’ll miss the train. 咱們走吧，要不就趕不上火車了。

有時只用else。如：

Drink this; else you will be sick. 把這喝下，否則你會生病。

有時用在句末（即其后不接其他詞），帶有一種威脅的口氣。如：

Give me the money, or else! 把錢給我，不然的話，哼！
