3. 表示虛擬語氣

should可用于多種虛擬語氣句型。如：

I insisted that he should stay. 我堅(jiān)持要他留下。

He suggested that she should come another day. 他建議她改天再來。

He demanded that John should go there at once. 他要求約翰立即到那里去。

If I should see him, I’ll ask him to ring you. 萬一我見到他，我要他給你打電話。

4. 表示驚訝

should用于某些句式中可以表示說話者的驚訝。如：

It’s strange that he should come so late. 他竟然來這么遲真是奇怪。

I’m surprised that he should feel lonely. 我很驚訝他竟感到孤獨(dú)。

I’m sorry that this should have happened. 我很遺憾，竟發(fā)生了這事兒。

這類句式如果不用should也不錯(cuò)，只是會(huì)沒有這種驚訝的語氣。比較：

I’m surprised that he should feel like that. 我奇怪他竟會(huì)有這種感覺。

I’m surprised that he feels like that. 我奇怪他會(huì)有這種感覺。

第一句用了should，其驚訝的語氣較重，含有難以理解的意味；第二句沒有用should，則說明說話者對(duì)所說情況并不感到驚訝，只是在客觀地描述一個(gè)事實(shí)，同時(shí)含有指說話者想了解原因的意味。
