第五，就算陳老師所說的“錯句”中的number就是“the number of…表示……的數量”中的number，試問陳老師說“但是當它用于 the number of…這一結構且表示“……的數量”時，number 用復數的情況是很少見的。”有事實根據嗎？筆者倒是有證據證明“the number of…表示……的數量時，number 用復數的情況并非很少見”。 請看例證：　　

在Lingoes(http://www.lingoes.cn) 之“句酷雙語例句”有46例“the numbers of…”：　　

"If we reckon up the numbers of visitors to the exhibition for the past week, we shall see a surprising total." 我們如果把過去一周的展覽會參觀人數加起來,我們會得出一個驚人的總數。　　

Nor has the progressive enlargement of the numbers of voters or the steady increase of popular education made any real difference. 投票人的數目逐漸增加，民眾教育日益發達，并沒有產生任何真正影響。

從以上可以看出：在英國英語里，“the numbers of...” 和“ the number of...”使用的頻率大致由1：27上升為 1：11；在美國英語里“the numbers of... ” 和“ the number of... ”使用的頻率大致由1：61上升為1：24。這些數字至少可以說明兩個問題：第一，陳老師所謂的“the number of…表示……的數量時，number 用復數的情況并非很少見”的說法是不成立的，是不符合英語實際的；第二，“the numbers of...”被越來越多的以英語為母語的人士所接受。　　

最后，請問陳老師現在是否能認可筆者的看法？另外，不知陳老師是否認為筆者的論據具有權威性。
