if you will…是怎么回事

一、問(wèn)題與疑惑
同學(xué)們知道，if有兩個(gè)主要用法，一是表示“是否”，用于引導(dǎo)賓語(yǔ)從句；二是表示“如果”，用于引導(dǎo)條件狀語(yǔ)從句。同時(shí)，大家在學(xué)習(xí)條件狀語(yǔ)從句的時(shí)候?qū)W過(guò)這樣一條規(guī)則——當(dāng)條件狀語(yǔ)從句表示將來(lái)意義時(shí)，習(xí)慣上不能使用將來(lái)時(shí)態(tài)，而應(yīng)用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)代替。如：
不知道明天是否會(huì)下雨，但要是下雨的話(huà)，我就呆在家里。
誤：I don’t know if it will rain tomorrow. But if it will rain tomorrow, I’ll stay at home.
正：I don’t know if it will rain tomorrow. But if it rains tomorrow, I’ll stay at home.
析：上句第一個(gè) if 引導(dǎo)的是賓語(yǔ)從句(if＝是否)，從句謂語(yǔ)用將來(lái)時(shí)態(tài)表示將來(lái)意義；第二個(gè)if引導(dǎo)的是條件狀語(yǔ)從句(if=如果)，從句謂語(yǔ)要用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)表示將來(lái)意義。
但問(wèn)題是，我們?cè)诮滩纳辖?jīng)常可以遇到if you will…這樣的表達(dá)——是上面的規(guī)則出了問(wèn)題？還是教材上的表達(dá)不合習(xí)慣？其實(shí)都不是！真正的問(wèn)題是，你沒(méi)有真正弄清if you will…的用法。
二、用法與解釋
首先，大家要明確if you will…這類(lèi)表達(dá)中的will不是用于構(gòu)成將來(lái)時(shí)態(tài)的助動(dòng)詞，而是一個(gè)情態(tài)動(dòng)詞，所以它的意思不是“將”，而是“愿意”“執(zhí)意”等。下面我們來(lái)歸納一下if you will…的用法。
1. will表示意愿
will用作情態(tài)動(dòng)詞最基本的用法就是表示意愿。如：
A man who won't work is no good. 不肯干活的人沒(méi)出息。
I will pay you at the rate you ask. 我愿意照你要求的價(jià)錢(qián)付款。
這樣用的will和would也可用于if條件狀語(yǔ)從句中。如：
If you will allow me, I will see you home. 如果你同意，我可以送你回家。
If you won’t come, I’ll go myself. 如果你不愿意去，那我就自己去。
I’ll thank you if you will give me a hand. 如果你能幫助我，我就謝謝你了。
I’ll pay for the hotel, if you will for the food. 如果你原付伙食錢(qián)，我就來(lái)付旅館錢(qián)。
If you won’t stop smoking, you can only expect to have a bad cough. 如果你不肯戒煙，你只會(huì)患嚴(yán)重咳嗽。
If he will only try harder, I’m sure he’d do well. 只要他愿再努力一些，我相信他會(huì)做好的。
If you will agree to pay us compensation, we will agree not to take the matter any further. 只要你會(huì)同意給我們賠償費(fèi)，我們就同意不再追究此事。
If you will indulge me for one moment, I think I can explain the matter to you. 你要是容我把話(huà)說(shuō)完，我想我可以把此事給你解釋清楚。
I’ll appreciate it if you will let me know in advance. 如果你事先讓我知道的話(huà)，我會(huì)很感激的。
I’d be grateful if you will let me know soon. 如果你肯早點(diǎn)告訴我，我會(huì)感激不盡。
注意，這類(lèi)句子的翻譯有時(shí)比較靈活。如：
If you will wait a moment, I’ll fetch the money. 請(qǐng)稍等一會(huì)，我就取錢(qián)去。
If you will follow me, I’ll show you the way. 請(qǐng)跟我來(lái)，我給你指路。
If you will wait a moment I’ll see if Mr Jones is free. 請(qǐng)您稍候片刻，我看看瓊斯先生是否有空。
If you would come this way, I’ll take you to the manager’s office. 請(qǐng)你從這邊走，我?guī)闳ソ?jīng)理辦公室。
If you will sit down for a few moments, I’ll tell the manager you’re here. 請(qǐng)稍坐，我這就通知經(jīng)理說(shuō)您來(lái)了。
will的過(guò)去式would也有類(lèi)似用法。如：
I would be very grateful if you would make the arrangements for me. 如果您能為我安排一下，我將不勝感激。
