1. 基本用法特點(diǎn)

used to的意思是“過(guò)去經(jīng)常”，其中的to是不定式符號(hào)，不是介詞，所以其后接動(dòng)詞原形(不接動(dòng)名詞)：

He used to live in Paris. 他過(guò)去一直住在巴黎。

I used to write poetry when I was young．我年輕時(shí)常常寫(xiě)詩(shī)。

"Do you play golf?" "No, but I used to." “你打高爾夫球嗎?”“不打，但我過(guò)去打。”

2. 如何構(gòu)成否定式和疑問(wèn)式

used to作為情態(tài)動(dòng)詞，可直接在used后加not構(gòu)成否定式，直接將used置于句首構(gòu)成疑問(wèn)式，但與一般的情態(tài)動(dòng)詞不同的，它也可像普通動(dòng)詞那樣借助助動(dòng)詞did構(gòu)成否定式和疑問(wèn)式：

He usedn’t [didn’t use] to come. 他過(guò)去不常來(lái)。

You used to go there, usedn’t [didn’t] you? 你過(guò)去常到那兒去，是嗎?

Where did you use to live? 你過(guò)去是住哪兒的?

【注】在現(xiàn)代英語(yǔ)中，used to的否定式和疑問(wèn)式通常借助助動(dòng)詞did構(gòu)成(特別是在口語(yǔ)和非正式文體中)，而直接將used作為助動(dòng)詞用通常被認(rèn)為是非常正統(tǒng)或過(guò)時(shí)的用法。然而有趣的是，有時(shí)還可見(jiàn)到以下這種混合形式：

Did you used to be a teacher? 你過(guò)去是當(dāng)老師的嗎?

They didn’t used to live here. 他們過(guò)去沒(méi)住在這兒。

3. used to與副詞連用時(shí)的位置

與often, always, never等副詞連用時(shí)，通常置于副詞之后，也可置于副詞之前：

I always used [used always] to be afraid of dogs. 我過(guò)去老是怕狗。

He often used [used often] to sit outside the door of his house. 他過(guò)去常坐他家門(mén)口。

注意，它通常不與具體的一般不能與表示次數(shù)(如twice, three times 等)或一段時(shí)間(如three months, five years等)的詞連用：

正：I went to Paris three times. 我去過(guò)巴黎3次。

誤：I used to go to Paris three times.

正：He lived in the country for three years. 他在鄉(xiāng)下住過(guò)3年。

誤：He used to live in the country for three years.
