◆under prep.

1. 用作介詞，基本義為“在……下”。如：under the table(在桌下)，under the bed(在床下)，under the tree(在樹下)等。

注意：undder 在很多情況下含義較抽象。如：

under [in] the circumstances 在這些情況下

under present conditions 在目前情況下

under sb’s leadership 在某人的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)下

under one’s direction 在某人的指導(dǎo)下

under the care of……在某人的照顧下

under one’s control 在某人的控制下

2. 有時英語雖然用了介詞 under, 但在漢語中卻并不譯為“在……下”。如：

He wore a vest under his jacket. 他在夾克里穿了件背心。

I was under the impression that he was honest, but infact he was a thief. 我認(rèn)為他很誠實，但實際上他是個賊。

注：有時后接某些具有動作意義的名詞，表示“在……中”。如：

under discussion(在討論中)，under repair(在修繕中)，under construction(在建設(shè)中)，under consideration(在考慮中)等。

3. 在很多情況下漢語中“在……下”并不能用英語的 under 來套譯。如：

(1) 表示在某人的幫助下，一般用介詞 with。如：

He got back his wallet with the help of the police. 在警察的幫助下，他找回了自己的錢包。

(2) 表示在(太)陽光下，一般用介詞 in。如：

Don’t read in the sun. 不要在陽光下看書。

The cat likes to sit in the sun. 貓喜歡坐在陽光下(即曬太陽)。

注：若要強(qiáng)調(diào)“太陽直射”或“炎熱”，有時也用 under。如：

under the burning sun of midsummer 在盛夏的灼熱陽光下

成語 under the sun, 不是指在太陽下，而是指“天下”、“世上”等。如：

It’s the best wine under the sun. 這是世上最好的酒。

(3) 表示借光做某事，一般用介詞 by。如：

He worked by the light of a candle. 他在燭光下工作。

◆understand v.

1. 表示“明白”、“理解”，其后可接動名詞(可帶邏輯主語)，但通常不接不定式。如：

那樣對待孩子，我不能理解。

正：I can’t understand treating children like that.

誤：I can’t understand to treat children like that.

有時可接從句。比較：

你需要換一換環(huán)境，這一點我完全理解。

正：I quite understand that you need a change.

正：I quite understand your needing a change.

我不明白他為什么搶劫自己的朋友。

正：I can’t understand why he robbed his friend.

正：I can’t understand his robbing his friend.

2. 表示“聽說”、“得知”、“推斷”等，可接不定式的復(fù)合結(jié)構(gòu)或從句等。比較：

我聽說他在巴黎。

正：I understand him to be in Paris.

正：I understand that he is in Paris.

我認(rèn)為他愿意來。

正：I understand him to say that he would come.

正：I understand him as saying that he would come.

注：在簡略回答中可用 so 代替前面已出現(xiàn)的 that 從句。如：

A：They are going to get married. 他們要結(jié)婚了。

B: I understand so. / So I understand. 聽說如此。

3. 用于 make oneself understood, 意為“清楚地表達(dá)自己的意思”，注意這里必須用反身代詞，同時 understand 要用過去分詞形式，而不能用原形。如：

I can’t make myself understood in English. 我不能用英語表達(dá)自己的意思。
