不表示“疑問”的what

人教版新課標英語課本中，有這樣一個句子：His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table.（他的眼睛注視著兄弟倆飯桌上的殘羹剩飯）。這是美國著名作家馬克·吐溫名作The Million Pound Bank Note上的一個句子。說的是一個窮困潦倒的美國青年，在英國富人家里看到的情況。從句子意思看，what不像是疑問，不能譯成“什么東西”。那么，what 究竟是什么意思呢？
更早些的時候，我們在課本中還學過類似的一句話：I lived in what you call “Ancient Greece.” 譯為：我生活在你們所說的“古希臘”。
What的主要作用有3個（當然還有其他用法，如引導感嘆句）：
1. 充當疑問代詞，引導特殊疑問句。
What are they talking about over there?
2. 充當連接代詞，引導名詞性從句（如賓語從句），仍然表示“疑問”概念。
I don’t know what they are talking about over there.
3. 充當“復合關系代詞”，引導名詞性從句（如賓語從句），不表示“疑問”概念。
“復合關系代詞”，是what的一個非常重要的用法，開始兩個句子中的what就體現了此種用法。下面再看兩個句子：
(1) We should do what the teacher tells us to do. 我們應該做老師叫我們做的事情。
(2) He isn't what he was ten years ago.他現在不是十年前的那個他了。
句 (1) 中的what 實際上就等于everything that，the things that，或the thing that，表示“物”的概念；句 (2) 中的what實際上就等于 the person that，表示“人”的概念。這兩句話解釋了what復合關系代詞的用法：它既充當了先行詞，又充當了關系代詞；既可以表示“物”，也可以表示“人”。
從語法作用看，what引導的這個句子叫做名詞性從句，因為它起的作用就相當于一個名詞。那么，what從句在主句中做什么成分呢？請看例句：
What we need is their help. （做主語）我們所需要的就是他們的幫助。
He has got what he wants. （做賓語）他得到了他想要的（東西）。
That is what I heard on the bus.（做表語）那就是我在公共車上聽到的（故事）。
What 本身在它引導的從句中做什么成分呢？請看例句：
What appears difficult may be very easy. （做主語）看起來很難的事情也許很容易。
What we liked most was his jokes.（做賓語）我們最喜歡的（東西）就是他講的笑話。
一開始的那個例句中，what等于the food that，what is left of the brothers' dinner on the table整個句子是stare at的賓語從句，而what又作了賓語從句的主語。
關于what 復合關系代詞的用法，下面再舉幾例，請試著翻譯一下：
1. The old man lived in what was called a small forest.
2. What surprised me most was his good memory.
3. What's in the box is a big jar, and what's in the jar is a kind of wine.
4. Being determined is a kind of quality and that's what it takes to do anything properly.
那么如何區別what是“表疑問的連接代詞”，還是“沒有疑問的復合關系代詞”呢？這里有一個規律可以參考：一般說來，what 引導的句子如果跟“疑問，詢問，懷疑，質疑，好奇，不知道，想知道，不清楚，不明白，不理解，不確定，懸而未決”等意義的動詞連用時，那么，what往往就是“疑問代詞”。反之，則是復合關系代詞。試比較：
What we will do hasn't been decided. 我們將要做什么還沒有決定。（what是表疑問的連接代詞）
What we will do is of great importance. 我們將要做的事情是非常重要的。（what是沒有疑問的復合不定代詞）
