物質(zhì)名詞的具體化、種類化或數(shù)量化：
wind風(fēng)→a mild wind一陣微風(fēng)

以上為“物質(zhì)名詞和抽象名詞轉(zhuǎn)化為可數(shù)名詞”的一些情況�，F(xiàn)在，我們回到本文即將論述的問題。除了lose heart, lose face之外，還有那些情況屬于可數(shù)名詞的抽象用法？
在教學(xué)過程中，我們經(jīng)常還碰到go to school / go to the school, in church / in the church, sit at table / sit at the table, in office / in the office等諸如此類的詞組（或句子），當(dāng)然大家都知道它們的區(qū)別。語法書在講冠詞的時(shí)候，也都舉一些類似的例子以示區(qū)別。但往往只說現(xiàn)象，不說理由（或只說是習(xí)慣用法）。
大家知道，可數(shù)名詞在單數(shù)情況下，使用時(shí)前面應(yīng)加冠詞，若無冠詞，則加其他限定詞如my, his, Tom’s等，但在實(shí)際語言中，確實(shí)存在著許多可數(shù)名詞用作抽象意義的現(xiàn)象。如：
He goes to school every day except Sunday. 除了星期天他每天都去上學(xué)。
He sometimes goes to the school to attend a teacher-parent meeting. 他有時(shí)候去學(xué)校參加家長會(huì)。
同樣是school，為什么前者不加冠詞？為什么后者加了冠詞？通過分析可知，不加冠詞時(shí)強(qiáng)調(diào)了它的“社會(huì)功能”（是接受教育的地方），是抽象概念；加了冠詞表示“具體的場所”，是具體概念。又如：
She went to church last Sunday. 她上周日都去做禮拜了。
She went to the church for a visit yesterday. 她昨天去參觀了那所教堂。
The man stayed in prison for almost ten years. 那人蹲了接近10年監(jiān)獄。
The man stayed in the prison for a night. 那人在監(jiān)獄里過了一夜。
He went to bed very late last night. 他昨晚睡覺很晚。
He went to the bed to fetch his clothes. 他走向床邊取衣服。
The whole family are sitting at table. 全家人正在吃飯。
The whole family sat at the table, chatting. 全家人坐在桌邊聊天呢。
Mr. Brown is now out of office due to his old age. 因年齡原因，布朗先生現(xiàn)不在職了。（退休了）
Mr. Brown walked out of the office to get some hot water. 布朗先生走出辦公室去取些熱水。
又如：
in office在職 in the office在辦公室里
in class在上課 in the class在班級(jí)里
in store儲(chǔ)備中，快要發(fā)生 in the store在倉庫
live on farm 靠農(nóng)業(yè)為生 live on the farm 居住在農(nóng)場
leave school 畢業(yè)，輟學(xué) leave the school 離開學(xué)校
