■in addition to 除……外

In addition to his salary, he has a bonus of 6 yuan per month. 除工資外，他每月還有6元錢獎金。

In addition to giving me some advice, he gave me some money. 他不僅給我提了些忠告，而且還給了我一些錢。

■in answer to作為對……的回答；響應(yīng)……的請求

In answer to his question, she shook her head. 對于他的問題，她以搖頭作答。

The doctor came at once in answer to my phone call. 醫(yī)生一接到我的電話就來了。

■in contrast to與……相反（完全不同）；與……相比，與……形成對比

In contrast to his brother, he was always considerate in his treatment of others. 和他弟弟相反，他總是能體諒他人。

The white half figure stood out plainly in contrast with the dark background. 以黑色背景相襯，白色半身像顯得一清二楚。

■in opposition to 與……相反（相對）

His views are in opposition to mine. 他的意見與我的意見相反。

■in preference to 優(yōu)先于，比起……來寧愿

She wears flowers in preference to jewels. 她寧可戴花而不戴珠寶。

I should choose this in preference to any other. 我寧愿選擇這個而不要其他的。

■in proportion to 相對……來說；與……成比例

The room is wide in proportion to its height. 這房間就其高度的比例而言是很寬的。

The tax increases in proportion to the amount you earn. 所得稅隨著你的收入額按比例增加。

■in reference to 關(guān)于，有關(guān)

I am writing in reference to your job application. 敬復(fù)者，關(guān)于您申請工作一事。

He spoke in reference to the new plan. 他就有關(guān)新計劃的問題發(fā)表了談話。

【注】其中的in也可換成with。如：

I have nothing to say with [in] reference to that incident. 關(guān)于那件事我無可奉告。

■in regard to 關(guān)于，對于

What have you to say in regard to that subject? 對那個問題你有什么要說的？

In regard to his suggestions, we shall discuss them fully. 關(guān)于他的建議，我們將充分地討論。

【注】有時也說with regard to。如：

With regard to your recent application, I am afraid we are unable to offer you the job. 關(guān)于你最近的申請，恐怕我們不能給你這個職位。

■in relation to 關(guān)于；涉及；與……相比

Many questions were asked, particularly in relation to the cost of the new buildings. 大家提出的問題很多，尤其是涉及新大廈成本的。

Prices are low in relation to those in other parts of Europe. 與歐洲其他地方相比，這里的物價是較低的。

【注】有時也說with relation to。如：

We must plan with relation to the future. 我們制定計劃必須考慮未來的因素。

【注】其中的to也可換成of。如：

She laughed in response to his jokes. 他的笑話引得她大笑。

The government acted in response to economic pressure. 政府因應(yīng)經(jīng)濟壓力而采取行動。
