■in the hope of 希望，期待

She lived in the hope of seeing one of her sons succeed. 她生活的寄托就是期望兒子當(dāng)中有人能出人頭地。

I called in the hope of finding her at home. 我希望她能在家才給她打的電話。

【注】有時(shí)也說in hopes of。如：

I’m in hopes of succeeding. 我懷著獲得成功的希望。

■in the interest of 為……的緣故（利益）

I agreed to pick her up in the interest of saving time. 我為了節(jié)省時(shí)間答應(yīng)去接她。

He is about to make trips abroad in the interest of his company. 他為了公司的事即將出國(guó)。

【注】其中的interest有時(shí)也可用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

In the interest(s) of safety, no smoking is allowed. 為了安全，嚴(yán)禁吸煙。

■in the light of 考慮到；根據(jù)；由于；鑒于

We shall have to change our decision in the light of what you have just said. 考慮到你剛剛發(fā)表的意見，我們要改變我們的決定。

It is to be regarded as excusable in the light of circumstances. 考慮到具體情況，這將被看作是可以原諒的。

【注】其中的定冠詞有時(shí)可以省略。如：

We need rethink our plan in light of this new information. 由于這個(gè)新的信息，我們需要重新考慮這項(xiàng)計(jì)劃。

In light of the report, let’s try a different approach to the problem. 根據(jù)這份報(bào)告，我們來試試用別的方法解決這個(gè)問題吧。

■in the middle of 在……當(dāng)中；在……的中途；正忙于

She sat quite still in the middle of her bed. 她一動(dòng)不動(dòng)地坐在床中間。

He got here in the middle of the night. 他在半夜到達(dá)這里。

I was in the middle of making a pie for dinner when the telephone rang. 我正忙著做正餐吃的餡餅，這時(shí)電話鈴響了。

■in the midst of 在……之中；正當(dāng)……的時(shí)候

They departed in the midst of a heavy rain. 他們?cè)诖笥曛须x去。

I’m afraid I can’t go. I’m in the midst of writing a report. 對(duì)不起我不能去，我正忙于寫份報(bào)告。

■in the name of 以……的名義；代表；看在……份上

In the name of the King, I arrest you. 我以國(guó)王的名義逮捕你。

I speak in the name of her. 我代表她發(fā)言。

In the name of love, stop it. 看在愛的份上，別再這樣做了。

■in the neighbourhood of 在……附近；大約

She lives in the neighbourhood of a shopping centre. 她住在一個(gè)商店區(qū)的附近。

She was paid in the neighbourhood of 3,000 dollars for the damage. 她得到約3,000美元的賠償金。

■in the presence of 在……面前；面臨著

He was questioned in the presence of a large number of people. 他當(dāng)著許多人的面受質(zhì)問。

He was calm in the presence of danger. 面對(duì)危險(xiǎn)，他鎮(zhèn)定自若。

■in the region of 在……范圍內(nèi)；在……左右，接近

He is an authority in the region of chemistry. 他是化學(xué)界的權(quán)威。

We have somewhere in the region of 500 firefighters in this area. 在這個(gè)地區(qū)，我們大約有500名消防人員。

■in the process of 在……的過程中

We’re still in the process of moving house. 我們還正在搬著家呢。

The building is in the process of being restored. 那棟建筑物正在修復(fù)中。

■in the vicinity of 在……附近；與……接近

The stolen car was found in the vicinity of the station. 被盜的汽車在車站附近被找到。

All meteorites are of the same age, somewhere in the vicinity of 4.5 billion years old. 所有隕石年代都差不多，大約在45億年左右。

■in the wake of 隨……到來之后；作為……的結(jié)果

Outbreaks of disease occurred in the wake of the drought. 那場(chǎng)旱災(zāi)過后疾病叢生。

【注】有時(shí)也說in one’s wake。如：

The war brought many social changes in its wake. 經(jīng)過這場(chǎng)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)，社會(huì)發(fā)生了很多變化。

■in the way of 在……方面；妨礙

Our country has done much in the way of inventions. 在發(fā)明方面我國(guó)作出了許多貢獻(xiàn)。

Your car is getting in the way of others. 你的汽車擋道了。
