一、must 與 have to 的強調重點不同

兩者都表示“必須”，但 must 側重于說話者的主觀看法，認為有必要或有義務去做某事；have to則重于客觀需要，含有“不得不”或“被迫”之意：

We must go at once. 我們必須馬上就走。

If I buy that car, I’ll have to borrow some money. 如果我要買那輛汽車, 我得借些錢。

二、must 與 have to 的時態形式不同

must 只有現在時一種形式(在賓語從句中可以表示過去)，而 have to則有多種時態形式：

He said (that) she must go with me. 他說她必須同我一起去。

She had to go there on foot yesterday. 昨天她不得不步行去那兒。

They have had to buy a car. 他們不得不買了輛小汽車。

三、must 與 have to 的非謂語形式不同

have to可以有分詞、動名詞、不定式等形式，而must則沒有這些形式：

He only saw her in the evening, having to be away all day. 他整天得外出，只能晚上見她。

I regret to have to trouble you again. 我很抱歉不得不再麻煩你一次。

四、must 與 have to 在否定式中意義不同

must 的否定式 mustn’t 意為“一定不要”、“不允許”；而 have to 的否定式 don’t have to 意為“不必”(=needn’t)。比較：

You mustn’t tell him about it．你一定不要告訴他這件事。(這可能是秘密)

You needn’t tell him about it．你不必告訴他這件事。(他可能知道了)
