▲五條用法：

根據“… of which / whom”引導的定語從句時介詞of的不同用法，下面我們為同學們歸納五條用法：

1. of 表示整體與部分的關系

這里所說的整體與部分的關系，指的是of前面的不定代詞或數詞表示“部分”，of后面關系代詞表示“整體”，如 five of which 的意思就是“……當中的五個”，a few of whom 的意思就是“……當中的幾個”等。請看實例：

I bought a dozen eggs, six of which broke when I dropped the box.  我買了一打雞蛋，六個在我失手掉了盒子時摔碎了。

The buses, most of which were already full, were surrounded by an angry crowd.  公共汽車大多數都已經擠滿了人，它們被憤怒的人群包圍著。

2. of 表示所屬關系

這里所說的所屬關系，其實就是一種所有格關系，如 the name of which 的意思就是“……的名字”，the hair of whom的意思就是“……的頭發”等。請看實例：

It was an agreement the details of which could not be altered. 這是一項其細節不可更改的協定。

In 1980 he caught a serious illness the effects of which he still suffers from. 1980年他患了到現在對他仍有影響的重病。

3. of 表示同位關系

所謂同位關系，指的是介詞of前面的不定代詞或數詞與of后面的關系代詞為同位關系，指的是同樣的人或事物。如：

Both teams made some wild guesses, none of which were right. 兩個隊都是瞎猜一通，沒有猜對一個。

We’ve tested three hundred types of boot, none of which is completely waterproof. 我們已經測試過300種靴子，沒有一種是完全防水的。

Each corner had a guard tower, each of which was exactly ten meters in height. 每個角落都有一座警戒塔，每座警戒塔正好10米高。

4. 表示范圍

of表示范圍時，意思是“在……當中”，通常可譯為“其中”。如：

They interviewed 30 people of whom five were possibles. 他們對30人進行了面試，其中有五人符合候選條件。

I saw three camp beds, of which two were occupied. 我看見了3張折疊床，其中兩張已有人占了。

這類用法其實可以與表示整體與部分關系的of互換，如上面兩句也可寫成：

They interviewed 30 people, five of whom were possibles.

5. of 構成固定搭配

有時of與其他詞語構成固定搭配，做題時要注意分清這個of到底是與哪些詞構成什么樣的固定搭配。如：

He’s married to a singer of whom you may have heard. 他與一位歌唱家結了婚，你可能聽說過這個人。（注意固定搭配hear of）

Never teach a child anything of which you are not yourself sure. 不要將你自己都沒有把握的東西教給孩子。（注意固定搭配be sure of）

The cell is the unit of which all living organisms are composed. 細胞是構成一切生物的單位。（注意固定搭配be composed of）

We struck up a conversation, in the course of which it emerged that he was a sailing man. 我們聊了起來，在談話過程中得知他是一名水手。（注意固定搭配in the course of）
