floating on air是什么意思

■該書的 1.47.2 節(第45頁)有這樣一句：

I feel as if / as though I’m floating on air. 我感到好像漂浮在空中一樣。

■首先要說明一下，譯文中的“漂浮”顯然為“飄浮”之誤。

■句中將 floating on air 譯為“飄浮在空中”值得商榷。從語法上看，漢語的“我感到好像飄浮在空中一樣”在英語中似乎應用虛擬語氣，因為“我飄浮在空中”不會是事實，而應是一種假想，所以對應的英語似乎應是：I feel as if / as though I were floating on air. 而不會是：I feel as if / as though I’m floating on air.

■其實，floating on air 是個習語，它也可寫成 walking on air，本人查了幾本英漢詞典，各詞典對此的解釋是“感到非常高興”“極其高興”“得意洋洋”“覺得飄飄然”等。本人同時還查了幾本原版詞典，其中新版的朗文英語詞典對此的解釋是to feel very happy，新版的劍橋高級英語詞典對此的解釋是 to be very happy and excited because something very pleasant has happened to you。下面是摘自英美原著或原版詞典的幾個例子：

When he got his exam results he was floating on air. 他得知考試結果后非常高興。

Ever since she met Mark, she’s been walking / floating on air. 自從遇到了馬克，她就一直得意洋洋。

The execution of this arrangement so thrilled Tollifer that he felt as though he were walking on air. 這事的安排使托力弗從心眼里樂了起來，覺得渾身飄飄然。

■建議將原句改譯如下：

I feel as if / as though I’m floating on air. 我感到自己好像(有點)得意洋洋。

從句用的是陳述語氣，說明“自己還真有點得意洋洋”。

■關于“飄浮在空中”的翻譯

如果要將“飄浮在空中”譯成英文，應該是float in the air，而不宜是 float on air。《朗文當代英語辭典》在 balloon 詞條對 hot air balloon 的解釋是這樣的：a large bag of strong light cloth filled with gas or heated air so that it can float in the air. It has a basket hanging below it for people to stand in. 該詞典在表示“飄浮在空中”時，用的就是 float in the air。
