(3) 用于整十的復(fù)數(shù)數(shù)詞前：表示幾十年代。如：

This took place in the 1930s. 這事發(fā)生在(20世紀(jì))30年代。

I was working in Singapore in the 60’s. 在60年代我在新加坡工作。

(4) 用于比較級(jí)前：用于“the+比較級(jí)，the+比較級(jí)”結(jié)構(gòu)中表示“越……就越……”。如：

—Do you want a big house? 你想買(mǎi)一棟大房子嗎?

—Yes, the bigger the better. 是的，越大越好。

—But the smaller it is, the less it will cost us to heat. 可是，房子越小，花的取暖費(fèi)就越少。

有時(shí)還可用于比較級(jí)前強(qiáng)調(diào)結(jié)構(gòu)。如：

If that is the case, all the better. 如果事實(shí)是那樣，那就更好了。

If you are able to come, so much the better. 如果你能來(lái)，那就更好了。

(5) 用于單位名詞前表示標(biāo)準(zhǔn)：即用于“單位詞”（hour, day, month, year, dozen, gallon, ton, yard等）前表示標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，相當(dāng)于漢語(yǔ)的“按”“論”“每”等。如：

The worker was paid by the day. 工人按日付酬。

Do you sell eggs by the kilo or by the dozen? 雞蛋怎么賣(mài)，論公斤，還是論打?

但是，by weight（按重量）習(xí)慣上不用冠詞。如：

Bananas are usually sold by weight. 香蕉通常按重量賣(mài)。
