■說表示方式時by 后接的名詞前不用冠詞，這是不準確的。就你提的例子來說，應該說，表示乘坐交通工具時，交通工具名詞前通常不用冠詞。如：　　

They go to school by bike.　　

■不知They go to school by the ropeway.這個句子的出處是否權威，但一般認為這樣的表達是“不好”的，最好不用 the 或將 by 改為 in，即說：　　

They go to school by ropeway.　　

They go to school in the ropeway.　　

但這也不說 by 后面絕對不能用 the。若名詞前有形容詞修飾，并且說話者是特指某一班交通，則也可用the。如：

■They come in the room by the front door. 這個句子中用 by 與上面句子中的 by 不是同一種用法，它不是表示方式，而是表示具體意義的“通過”。又如：　　

The thieves entered the building by the back door. 小偷從后門進了大樓。
