因為當 should 表示不太可能發生的事時，其主句可以用陳述語氣。請看以下說明（摘自《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》第4版的 should 詞條）：

should用于 if 和 in case 之后或將主語與動詞倒置，表示某事不太可能發生)：

If you should change your mind do let me know. 萬一你要改變主意 一定要告訴我。

If he should have forgotten to go to the airport nobody will be there to meet her. 要是他忘了去機場 就沒人去那兒接她了。

Should anyone phone (ie If anyone phones) please tell them I’m busy. 有人打電話來 就說我很忙。

換了也成立，但意思有所變化：

■如果用 will，句子仍為陳述語氣，只是前面的 should 表示發生的可能性很小，此時的 should 通常譯為“萬一”，你的句子可作如下理解：

Should you be fired, your health care and other benefits will not be immediately cut off. (=If you should be fired, your health care and other benefits will not be immediately cut off.) 萬一你被解雇，你的醫保和其他保險利益不會馬上被中止。

■如果用 would，句子則為虛擬語氣，是對將來情況的假設，此時句子可理解為：

Should you be fired, your health care and other benefits would not be immediately cut off. (=If you should be fired, your health care and other benefits would not be immediately cut off.) 如果你被解雇，你的醫保和其他保險利益不會馬上被中止。
