■missing 與 lost 的區(qū)別　　

從詞形上看，在現(xiàn)代英語中，英語中只有missing這一形容詞，沒有missed這一形容詞；同樣，英語只有lost這一形容詞，沒有losing這一形容詞。因為我們在最新出版的“牛津高階英語詞典”“朗文當代高級英語詞典”這類權威詞典中查不到它們，就好比在“現(xiàn)代漢語詞典”查不到的漢字一樣，我們一般認為這樣的漢字在現(xiàn)代漢語中是不用的。　　

從詞義上看，雖然兩者均可表示“丟失的”，但 missing 除此之外還可表示“不見了”“不在場”“缺掉的”等，比較《美國傳統(tǒng)詞典·第4版》對 missing 的解釋就是 not present; absent; lost。　　

■left 與 remaining 的區(qū)別　　

查“朗文當代高級英語詞典”，該書并沒有收left表示“剩下的”這一用法的形容詞，但收錄了remaining 表示“剩下的”這一形容詞。至于將leaving 和 remained 用作形容詞的用法在手頭十幾本大小詞典中均沒有查到。　　

事實上，left 表示“剩下的”，是被當作過去分詞來用的，并且尤其用于 there be, find, have, have got 等動詞句型中（當然也可用于其他句型中）。如下面的一些例子是本人平時積累的，特與你分享：　　

I’ve only 2 rounds left. 我只剩下兩發(fā)子彈了。　　

After deductions there was not much left. 減去扣除額后所剩無幾了。　　

We’ve only got five litres of petrol left. 我們只剩下5升汽油了。　　

I have only a trifle of my saving left. 我的積蓄花得只剩下一點了。　　

Indian tigers have been hunted so much there are few left. 印度虎因捕殺過度而所剩無幾。　　

He’s moved most of his stuff; there are just a few odds and ends left. 他把大部分東西都搬走了，只留下一些零星雜物。　　

下面再看看 remaining 的用例，這些也是本人平時搜集的：　　

leave the remaining points for our next meeting 余下的各點留待下次會議再議　　

ration the remaining water out among the survivors 把剩余的水分發(fā)給幸存者　　

Guests were crowded into the few remaining rooms. 把客人都擠在剩余的幾個房間里了。　

The three remaining verbs can be used in two constructions. 余下的三個動詞可用于以下兩種結構。

由于 remain 是不及物動詞，所以用于名詞前作定語時，不能用過去分詞，而應用現(xiàn)在分詞(相當于形容詞)：　　

The remaining students will serve as audience. 剩下的學生將充作聽眾。　　

比較：　　

You may have all those that remain. 剩下所有的都歸你。（that remain 為定語從句）　　

He drank up the water that remained in the jug. 他把瓶里剩下的水喝完了。（that remained in the jug 為定語從句）
