當主語為復數，而又個別擁有什么時，會有兩種說法。一是以每個人有一個的角度來看，二是以總和的角度來看。比如說“學生們都舉起手來”這個例句，有以下兩種說法：　　

a. The students all raised their hand.〔分配〕　　

b. The students all raised their hands.〔集合〕　　

不管用a或b，只要遵循以下原則就沒有問題：　　

(1) 若不致引起誤會的話，單數、復數皆可使用由于一般用復數會顯得比較清楚，因此多用復數形。如：　　

All participants in the race should give their name (s) to the starter. 所有參加徑賽者，都得向宣布開跑的人報上自己的姓名。　　

(2) 在慣用語句中一般會用單數形者。如：We must keep (it) in mind that money does not grow on trees. 我們必須記得錢不會從樹上長出來。　　

(3) 用單數意思較清楚的情況：　　

They are all expected to send in a written report every two months. 他們每兩個月都得交一份書面報告。（如此可知是個別一份報告）　　

Pupils were asked to name their favorite painter. 學生們都被要求舉出最喜歡的畫家。（此處很清楚地顯示是每個人舉出一個畫家的名字）　　

■第二個問題：the older 指 the older one，指年紀較大的一個；the younger 指 the younger one，指年紀較輕的一個。故用單數。　　

注意它與 the old（老年人；表復數意義）和the young（年輕人；表復數意義）不同。
