All London was agog to see the two “parents”of radium. ■作賓語(yǔ)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ) That set the whole town agog with excitement. The prospect of Christmas left the children agog. ■作狀語(yǔ) She arrived, agog, to discover what had prevented him being there. 二、agog 的搭配 1. all [有時(shí)more] agog。 The voters were all agog to see their new president. They were even more agog during the much publicized Banana Dance when she danced with only a curtain of bananas round her waist. 注:楊發(fā)河著《英語(yǔ)形容詞句型活用指南》(江西高校出版社1992年12月第1版)p16:agog前不用very,如不說(shuō)very agog,而說(shuō)much[very much] agog。 然而,在BNC(http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk)和BUY-BNC BRTISH NATIONAL CORPUS (UK,1980s-1993) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University ) http://corpus.byu.edu/bnc/ 上共有25例包含 agog 的例句,竟無(wú)1例much[very much] agog; 在BYU: THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY(http://corpus.byu/oed/)上共有29例包含 agog 的例句,竟無(wú)1例much[very much] agog; 在TIME CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1923-2006) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University ) (http://corpus.byu.edu/time) 上共有111例包含 agog 的例句,竟無(wú)1例much[very much] agog; 在BUY CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1990-2008) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University) http://www.americancorpus.org/上共有84例包含 agog 的例句,竟無(wú)1例much[very much] agog。 由此看來(lái),盡管語(yǔ)法專(zhuān)家根據(jù)語(yǔ)法理論認(rèn)為much或very much可以修飾agog,但實(shí)際上,無(wú)論英國(guó)英語(yǔ)還是美國(guó)英語(yǔ)都不用much或very much修飾agog,而是通常用all 來(lái)修飾agog。 2. agog at sth.。 He was all agog at the surprise announcement. 3. agog for sth.。 The villagers were agog for the news. 4. agog with sth.。 The children were all agog with excitement at going to the seaside for summer holidays. 5. agog over sth.。 She was all agog over her new granddaughter. 6. agog about sth.。 In Britain commentators and policy makers are agog about a new U.S. doctrine, unveiled by President George W. Bush in a commencement address at West Point.
