There are numbers who support us. 支持我們的人很多。　　

6. 陸谷孫主編《英漢大詞典》(第2版) (上海譯文出版社2007年3月第1版)p1339：大數(shù)目；[常作numbers]多數(shù)，大批；數(shù)量上的優(yōu)勢(shì)：　　

Strength lies in numbers. 人多力量大。　　

A few honest men are better than numbers. 用人不在于多而在于忠誠(chéng)可靠。　　

第五，就算陳老師所說的“錯(cuò)句”中的number就是“the number of…表示……的數(shù)量”中的number，試問陳老師說“但是當(dāng)它用于 the number of…這一結(jié)構(gòu)且表示“……的數(shù)量”時(shí)，number 用復(fù)數(shù)的情況是很少見的。”有事實(shí)根據(jù)嗎？筆者倒是有證據(jù)證明“the number of…表示……的數(shù)量時(shí)，number 用復(fù)數(shù)的情況并非很少見”。 請(qǐng)看例證：　　

在Lingoes(http://www.lingoes.cn) 之“句酷雙語(yǔ)例句”有46例“the numbers of…”：　　

"If we reckon up the numbers of visitors to the exhibition for the past week, we shall see a surprising total." 我們?nèi)绻�把過去一周的展覽會(huì)參觀人數(shù)加起來,我們會(huì)得出一個(gè)驚人的總數(shù)。　　

Nor has the progressive enlargement of the numbers of voters or the steady increase of popular education made any real difference. 投票人的數(shù)目逐漸增加，民眾教育日益發(fā)達(dá)，并沒有產(chǎn)生任何真正影響。

請(qǐng)?jiān)倏从��?guó)英語(yǔ)和美國(guó)英語(yǔ)里“the numbers of... ” 和“ the number of... ”使用的頻率比例：

和BUY-BNC BRTISH NATIONAL CORPUS (UK,1980s-1993) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University ) http://corpus.byu.edu/bnc/ 上共有920例“the numbers of...” 和 9742 例 “the number of...”(筆者注：大致為1：11)

從以上可以看出：在英國(guó)英語(yǔ)里，“the numbers of...” 和“ the number of...”使用的頻率大致由1：27上升為 1：11；在美國(guó)英語(yǔ)里“the numbers of... ” 和“ the number of... ”使用的頻率大致由1：61上升為1：24。這些數(shù)字至少可以說明兩個(gè)問題：第一，陳老師所謂的“the number of…表示……的數(shù)量時(shí)，number 用復(fù)數(shù)的情況并非很少見”的說法是不成立的，是不符合英語(yǔ)實(shí)際的；第二，“the numbers of...”被越來越多的以英語(yǔ)為母語(yǔ)的人士所接受。　　

最后，請(qǐng)問陳老師現(xiàn)在是否能認(rèn)可筆者的看法？另外，不知陳老師是否認(rèn)為筆者的論據(jù)具有權(quán)威性。
