◆ago adv.

1. 表示多久時間“以前”這一意義時，注意：

(1) 只能與一段時間連用，不與一點時間連用；

(2) 只能放在時間段之后，不能置于其前；

(3) 通常只與過去時連用，不與現在完成時連用。

He left here five years ago. 他五年前就離開這兒了。

但是若用于表示推測的句子，或因為行文的需要而使句子生動等，ago 有時也可與完成式連用。如：

He may have been there a month ago. 他也許一個星期以前就去過那兒。

He told me he had seen her a few days ago. 他告訴我他幾天前見到過她。

2. 漢語中的“多久以前的今天(明天)”，英語一般用“一段時間＋ago today (tomorrow)”來表示。如：

He died ten years ago today. 他是10年前的今天去世的。

The meeting took place a fortnight ago tomorrow. 會議在兩個星期以前的明天舉行。

3. 含有 ago 的短語通常用作狀語，有時也用作表語。如：

A: How long ago did you go there? 你多久以前去過那兒?

B: It was ten years ago—a long time ago. 10年前——很久以前了。

It was nine years and two American Presidents ago. 那是九年前的事了，其間換過兩任美國總統。

◆agree v.

1. 表示同意某人，后接介詞 with。如：

I quite agree with you. 我完全同意你。

I agree with him on that point. 在那一點上我同意他。

注：agree with 除表示同意某人外，還可表示同意某人的意見、想法、分析、解釋等(即持同一觀點)，也可表示(食物、天氣等)對某人適宜，還可表示“與……一致”。如：

We agree with what you say. 我們同意你說的。

The food does not agree with me. 這食物對我不適合。

His story agrees with the facts. 他的陳述與事實相符。

2. 漢語的“同意某人做某事”，英語中不能直譯為 agree sb to do sth, 而應根據情況改用其它結構：

他同意我回家。

正：He agreed to let me go home.

正：He agreed to my going home.

誤：He agreed me to go home.

◆alive adj.

1. 表示“活著的”、“活躍的”等，主要用作表語，有時用作后置定語或補語。如：

He must be still alive. 他一定還活著。

He’s the happiest man alive. 他在世界上最幸福的人。

He was caught alive. 他被活捉了。

注：若 alive 本身有修飾語，也可用作前置定語。如：

a really alive student 一個十分活躍的學生

2. alive 一般不用 very 修飾，但可用 much, very much, all 等修飾。如：

He is (very) much alive. 他非常活躍。

The city was all alive when we arrived. 我們到達時，城里非常熱鬧。

注：當 alive (to) 表示“意識到”(=aware of)時，可用 very修飾。如：

He is very alive to the danger. 他完全意識到了這危險。

3. be alive with(充滿，到處是)。如：

The woods are alive with birds. 樹林中到處是鳥。

We are alive with hope. 我們滿懷希望。
