有時表示“使某人不及格”(及物)。如：

注：在現代英語中，有時也用介詞 on。如：

I passed the written paper but failed on my oral. 我的書面考試通過了，但口語考試沒有及格。

The teacher failed me on the written paper. 老師給我的筆試評了個不及格。

2. 其后可接不定式，意為“不能”、“沒有”、“忘記”等。如：

He failed to pass the exam. 他考試沒有及格。

He failed to get there on time. 他未能準時趕到那兒。

Don’t fail to ring me up. 別忘記給我打電話。

表示“不能成功地做某事”，有時可后接 in doing sth。比較:

他未能說服她。

正：He failed to persuade her.

正：He failed in persuading her.
