正：How did the accident happen?

2. 表示某事發生某人身上，其后接介詞 to。如：

What happend to you (the radio)? 你(收音機)怎么樣了?

She hoped nothing bad would happen to him. 她希望不會有壞事發生在他頭上。

3. 表示“碰巧”，也是不及物動詞，比較以下同義句型：

他打電話時，她碰巧不在家。

正：She happened to be out when he called.

正：It (so) happened that she was out when he called.

他碰巧聽說過那個地方。

正：He happened to have heard of the place.

正：It happened that he had heard of the place.

4. 后接介詞 on / upon, 表示“巧遇”、“偶然發現”。如：

I happened upon her in the street the other day. 幾天前我在街上碰巧遇見了她。

He happened on the book in the bookstore. 他在書店偶然發現了這本書。
