■“I don’t know也可用作插入語”，這個命題對不對？

“特殊疑問句”，是說話人想從對方那里得到答案（這個答案不是Yes和No，而是具體的內容）。特殊疑問句中，最典型的放在特殊疑問詞之后的插入語，就是Do you think。例如：

What do you think will happen next? 你認為接下來會發生什么？

Who do you think will win the first prize?  你認為誰會獲得一等獎?

How do you think the war broke out?  你認為那場戰爭是怎樣爆發的?

When do you think China will host the World Cup?  你認為中國何時會舉辦世界杯?

Where do you think we can get this machine?  你看我們在哪兒能搞到這種機器?

Why do you think most of children like cartoon?  你認為為什么孩子們喜歡卡通?

Which do you think is the best way to spend the money?  你們覺得花這筆錢最好的方法是什么？

之所以認定Do you think為插入語，是因為Do you think并沒有改變特殊疑問句的意義，只是改變了句子原有的結構（實際上，當特殊疑問詞作主語時，加了Do you think也沒有改變句子語序，例如：What do you think will happen next? 去掉Do you think，語序不變：What will happen next?）。

如果以上所有句子都去掉Do you think，那么意思沒有變化。Do you think只為強調說話人征求對方的看法而已。

除此之外，I don’t know也可以跟特殊疑問句連用，相當于一個插入成分。跟Do you think不同的是，特殊疑問句是它的賓語從句。例如：

A. What will happen next?

B. I don’t know what will happen next.

這兩句在意思上沒有什么差別：都是表達了“我不知道未來會發生什么”。只不過句子形式不同，句A是特殊疑問句，句B是陳述句。

■我們再看下面一組句子：

第一組：（含特殊疑問詞what）

1. What will become of us if the war breaks out?  如果戰爭爆發我們會怎樣?

2. I don’t know what will become of us if the war breaks out.

3. If the war breaks out, I don’t know what will become of us.

第二組：（含特殊疑問詞who）

1. Who will care for him if his wife dies?  假若他妻子死了，誰照顧他?

2. I don’t know who will care for him if his wife dies.

3. If his wife dies, I don’t know who will care for him.

第三組：（含特殊疑問詞when）

1. If we offer you the job, when will you be free to join us?  如果我們給你這個工作，你什么時候可以到我們這兒來。

2. I don’t know when you will be free to join us if we offer you the job.

3. If we offer you the job, I don’t know when you will be free to join us.

第四組：（含特殊疑問詞where）

1. If I believe this thought, where will it lead me?  如果我相信這個想法，它將把我帶往何處?

2. I don’t know where it will lead me if I believe this thought.

3. If I believe this thought, I don’t know where it will lead me.

第五組：（含特殊疑問詞how）

1. How will he survive if he can’t beg? 如果他不能乞討，他將如何生存?

2. I don’t know how he will survive if he can’t beg.

3. If he can’t beg, I don’t know how he will survive.

【分析探究】以上5組句子，分別含有特殊疑問詞what, who, when, where, how。綜合特點分析如下：

1. 句1，是一個含有if條件句的復合句，主句是特殊疑問句形式。

2. 句2，是在這個復合句之前加了I don’t know。這樣，復合句變成了I don’t know的賓語從句。

3. 句3，如果說句2中的I don’t know還不算真正的插入語的話，那么，句3中的I don’t know放在了if從句之后、主句之前，就變成了地地地道的插入成分。再從If 從句和主句的意思關聯看，I don’t know并非是If從句的主句，它與If 從句的內容毫不相干。如：If his wife dies, I don’t know who will care for him. 這個句子中，條件句If his wife dies跟主句who will care for him的意思有關，跟I don’t know無關。也就是說，If his wife dies是who will care for him的條件狀語，不是I don’t know的條件。這再次證明了I don’t know是插入成分。

【題外話】“I don’t know也是一種插入語”，作者不惜篇幅去論證這個問題，旨在為了幫助網友正確理解一道試題，同時排除該題是“錯綜時間虛擬條件句”這個說法。

下面，是網上流傳的一道英語試題：

Thank you very much indeed. If it had not been for your advice I really _____ what I should have done.

A.do not know      B.have not known     C.had not known      D. would not have known.

（答案：選A）

該題目的命題者，可能是出于獵奇的心理，或者說有點挖空心思。為了制造麻煩，選取了一個與虛擬句無關的插入語I don’t know 為選擇題。

追根求源，這個句子來自《牛津英語用法指南》(261條，P 340 )，是if用法條目下If it had not been for的一個例句，Thank you very much indeed.這句話原來沒有，是命題人加上去的。

因為這個句子的出處沒有問題，而且頗具權威性，所以，有人拿來作為命題的題干，目的是給學生增加迷惑度。原句是：

If it hadn’t been for your help, I don’t know what I’d have done. 要不是你的幫助，真不知道我當時會怎么辦。

如果把插入語I don’t know放在句首，則很容易理解：

I don’t know what I would have done if it hadn’t been for your help.

或者直接刪去不用，句子意思仍然保持不變：

What would I have done if it hadn’t been for your help?

無獨有偶，《柯林斯高級英語詞典》上也有這樣一句：If we had been spotted at that point, I don’t know what would have happened to us. 如果當時我們被發現了，我不知道會有什么后果。

如果把插入語I don’t know放在句首，則很容易理解：

I don’t know what would have happened to us if we had been spotted at that point.

或者直接刪去不用，句子意思仍然保持不變：

What would have happened to us if we had been spotted at that point?

無論是真實條件句還是虛擬條件句，都是用來修飾主句謂語動詞的，說明主句謂語動詞發生的條件。If it hadn’t been for your help, I don’t know what I’d have done. 這個句子中，If it hadn’t been for your help肯定不會修飾I don’t know，它是修飾What would I have done的。因此，I don’t know只能視為“插入語”。

把I don’t know視為“插入語”，類似難題就會迎刃而解。
