18. privilege 特權(quán)，特許；榮幸，榮耀

用于the privilege of doing sth，表示“有做某事的特權(quán)”“有幸做某事”。如：

I had the privilege of meeting the queen. 我有會見王后的特權(quán)。

He was given the privilege of using his brother’s car. 他得到特許可以用他哥哥的車。

I had the privilege of interviewing Picasso in the 1960s. 我在20世紀60年代有幸采訪了畢加索。

I hope to have the privilege of working with them again. 希望有幸能與他們再度合作。

按傳統(tǒng)語法，名詞privilege后可接of doing sth，不接to do sth，但這在現(xiàn)代英語中已有所突破，有時也可見到后接不定式作定語的例子。如：

I had the great privilege to play for Yorkshire. 我很榮幸地代表約克郡參賽。

注意以下句中privilege后接的不定式不是定語，而是句子主語：

It is a great privilege to know you. 認識你真是莫大的榮幸。

It is a great privilege to accept this award. 獲得這個獎項是一個大殊榮。

下面句子中的不定式為賓語補足語：

I consider it a privilege to study your method of working. 我認為學(xué)習(xí)你的工作方法是很幸運的。

I esteem it a privilege to address such a distinguished audience. 我認為能向各位貴賓演講十分榮幸。

19. probability 很可能

用于the probability of doing sth，其意為“做某事或發(fā)生某情況的可能性。如：

What is the probability of winning? 贏的可能有多大？

The probability of winning the lottery is really very low. 彩票的中獎機會是非常低的。

The probability of getting all the answers correct is about one in ten. 所有答案都正確的概率只有大約十分之一。

有時動名詞前可能有邏輯主語。如：

There is little probability of his succeeding. 他不大可能成功。

The probability of her making a full recovery is quite good. 她完全康復(fù)的可能性很大。

20. property 功能，特性

用于the property of doing sth，表示“做某事的特性”。如：

Oil has the property of floating on water. 油有浮在水上的特性。

Paraffin has the property of dissolving grease. 石蠟具有溶解油脂的特性。

21. prospect 前景，景象；指望，期望

用于the prospect of doing sth，主要有以下幾個意思：

(1) 表示“做某事的景象或跡象等”。如：

There is no immediate prospect of his returning soon. 沒有跡象顯示他會很快回來。

(2) 表示“做某事的希望、預(yù)期或可能性”。如：

He has little prospect of succeeding. 他沒什么成功的希望。

She looks forward to the prospect of being accepted at her favorite college. 她盼望能被她最喜歡的大學(xué)錄取。

Unfortunately, there is little prospect of seeing these big questions answered. 遺憾的是，基本上不可能看到這些大問題得到解決。

(3) 表示“想到要做某事”。如：

The prospect of becoming a father filled him with alarm. 一想到將要為人父他就滿懷憂思。

Her heart sank at the prospect of introducing him to her family. 一想到要把他介紹給她的家里人，她的心就一沉。

I’m terrified at the prospect of being alone in the house. 我想到要自己一個人待在房子里就感到害怕。
