(1) first 意為“先”、“首先”，主要用來說明順序，暗示接下去還有其它的動作或事件要發生，因此其后往往接有或暗示有 then, next, last 之類的詞。如：

First think, then act. 先想清楚再行動。

A：Have some tea. 喝點茶吧。

B：I’ll finish my work first. 我先把工作做完再說。

(2) at first 意為“起初”、“開始”，它主要強調前后對照，暗示接下去的動作與前面的動詞不同甚至相反，因此其后通常有but, afterwards, soon, at last 等詞語相呼應。如：

You’ll find it difficult at first, but soon it’ll geteasier. 開始你會發現它很難，但不久它就會變得容易起來。

At first I didn’t want to go, but I soon changed my mind. 我開始不想去，但我很快就改變了主意。

◆fish n.

1. 表示“魚”，是集合名詞，其復數與單數同形。如：

He caught a fish (a lot of fish). 他抓了一條(許多)魚。

Fish live in the water. 魚生活在水里。

注：強調魚的種類，有時可用復數形式的 fishes。如：

There are many kinds of fish(es) around the island.
