4. 用作動(dòng)詞，多用作及物動(dòng)詞，可指身體方面的疼痛（不用于被動(dòng)形式)也可指精神方面的痛苦(可以有被動(dòng)形式)。如：

It pains me to see you living this way. 看到你這樣生活，我很痛心。

She was pained to hear of his death. 聽到他的死訊，她很痛苦。

◆paper n.

1. 表示“紙”，是不可數(shù)名詞。如：

It is made of paper. 它是紙做的。

Give me a piece [sheet] of paper. 給我一張紙。

2. 表示“報(bào)紙”、“文件”、“證件”、“試題”、“考卷”、“書面作業(yè)”、“論文”等，均為可數(shù)名詞。如：

Get me an evening paper, please. 請(qǐng)給我拿張晚報(bào)來。

The teacher was marking the papers. 教師在批改考卷。

Professor Li read a paper on how to teach English. 李教授宣讀了一篇如何教授英語的論文。

注：表示“文件”、“證件”、“身份證”，多用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

Can I see your papers, please? 我可以看看你的證件嗎?

Some important papers were stolen. 有一些重要的文件被盜。

◆pardon v.

1. 用作動(dòng)詞，表示“原諒”，通常是及物動(dòng)詞，其后除接名詞或代詞作賓語外，還接動(dòng)名詞(常帶有邏輯主語)作賓語(注:不接不定式作賓語)。如：

He asked her to pardon him (his rudeness). 他請(qǐng)求她原諒他(他的無禮)。

Pardon my opening your letter by mistake. 請(qǐng)?jiān)�諒我錯(cuò)開了你的信。

Pardon my interrupting you. / Pardon me for interrupting you. 請(qǐng)?jiān)�諒我打斷你的話�?/SPAN>

2. 用于 I beg your pardon, 主要表示道歉或沒聽清對(duì)方說話時(shí)叫對(duì)方重說。如：

I beg your pardon, I meant the green one. 對(duì)不起，我指的是那個(gè)綠色的。

A：Where’s the post office, please? 請(qǐng)問郵局在什么地方?

B：I beg your pardon? 請(qǐng)問，你說什么?

A：I asked where the post office is. 我問郵局在什么地方。

◆parent n.

1. 表示“父親”或“母親”，要表示“父母雙親”，須用其復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

Being a parent can be hard work. 為人父(母)可能很不容易。

John and Mary have become parents. 約翰和瑪麗已做父母了。

2. 因父母雙親只有兩個(gè)，所以連用某些不定代詞時(shí)要注意: 可與both, either, neither 連用，但不能與 all, any, none 連用。如：

我父母都喜歡他。

誤：All my parents like him.

正：Both my parents like him.

父母親中隨便哪個(gè)都可以參加學(xué)校會(huì)議。

誤：Any parent can attend the school meeting.

正：Either parent can attend the school meeting.

他父母都不知道他在哪兒。

誤：None of his parents knows where he lives.

誤：Neither of his parents knows where he lives.
