復(fù)合介詞歸納——“in the+名詞+of”類型

■in the absence of 缺乏；不在；無……時

In the absence of anybody more experienced, I took command. 由于找不到其他更有經(jīng)驗的人，只好由我來指揮。

I was obliged to accept it as true in the absence of other evidence. 我在缺乏其他證據(jù)的情況下只好把它看成真的。

■in the act of 正在做……時

He was caught in the act of stealing. 他在行竊時被當場抓住。

■in the case of 就……來說，至于

■in the direction of 朝……方向

A woman was seen running in the direction of the station. 有人看見一名女子朝著車站的方向奔去。

Those with book learning must develop in the direction of practice. 有書本知識的人應(yīng)該向?qū)嵺`方面發(fā)展。

■in the event of 如果，萬一

In the event of rain, the party will be held indoors. 如果天下雨，聚會在室內(nèi)進行。

In the event of fire, leave the building as quickly as possible. 遇上了火災(zāi)，應(yīng)盡快離開大廈。

■in the eyes of 有……看來

In the eyes of the public, the price is too high. 在公眾看來，物價太高了。

【注】其中的eyes也可換成單數(shù)，但不如用復(fù)數(shù)普通。該表達的另一表達是in one’s eyes。如：

In your father’s eyes, you’re still a child. 在你父親看來，你還是個孩子。

■in the face of 在……面前；不顧

He was brave in the face of danger. 面對危險他表現(xiàn)得很勇敢。

We fought on in the face of terrible odds. 盡管力屈勢窮，我們還是戰(zhàn)斗下去。

■in the form of 以……的形式

The novel is cast in the form of a diary. 這部小說是以日記的形式寫的。

Our soundings are displayed in the form of a graph. 我們的調(diào)查結(jié)果已用圖表列出。

Most synthetic detergents are in the form of powder or liquid. 大多數(shù)合成洗滌劑呈粉狀或液態(tài)。

■in the front of 在……內(nèi)的前部

The driver sits in the front of the bus. 公共汽車上的司機都是坐在車前的。

In the front of the picture is the figure of a man. 在這張照片的最前面是一位男士。

【注】in the front of與in front of用法不同，前者表示“在……的前部”，指范圍之內(nèi)的前部；后者表示“在……前面”，指范圍之外的前面。如：

There’s a bus stop in front of the school. 學(xué)校前面有個公共汽車站。

I prefer to travel in the front of the car. 我喜歡坐在汽車的前面。

而at the front of則兼有以上兩個短語的意思和用法。如：

He planted some trees at the front of the house. 他在房子前面種了些樹。

The noisy children were asked to sit at the front of the class. 愛吵鬧的小孩被老師調(diào)到前排去。
