13. procedure 程序，手續(xù)，步驟；治療，處理

用于procedure for doing sth，有以下兩個(gè)意思：

(1) 表示“做某事的程序（手續(xù)、步驟）”。如：

What’s the procedure for applying for a visa? 申請(qǐng)簽證需要怎樣的手續(xù)？

This is standard procedure for getting rid of toxic waste. 這是清除毒物的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)步驟。

The procedure for doing this is explained fully in Appendix 3. 做這事的操作步驟在附錄3有完整的解釋。

(2) 表示“做某事的治療（處理）”。如：

A doctor performed a procedure for cleaning and closing a wound. 醫(yī)生對(duì)傷口做了清洗和縫合的處理。

有時(shí)procedure 后面可接in doing sth，表示“在……時(shí)的程序或步驟”。如：

Michael did not follow the correct procedure in applying for a visa. 邁克爾在申請(qǐng)護(hù)照時(shí)沒(méi)有遵循正確的程序。

14. rule 規(guī)則，規(guī)定，慣例

用于rule for doing sth，意為“做某事的規(guī)則（規(guī)定、慣例）”。如：

It is feared the government might change the rules for claiming dole. 人們擔(dān)心政府會(huì)改變失業(yè)救濟(jì)金申領(lǐng)的規(guī)定。

There are no hard and fast rules for planning healthy meals. 在安排健康飲食方面，沒(méi)有什么一定之規(guī)。

但是，make a rule of doing sth是固定搭配，其中用介詞of，表示“有做某事的習(xí)慣”“通常做某事”。比較以下同義句：

He makes a rule of getting up at six.

= He makes it a rule to get up at six.

=It is his rule to get up at six.

=His rule is to get up at six.

=It’s a rule with him to get up at six. 

他通常在6點(diǎn)起床。

15. talent 才能，天賦，天分

用于talent for doing sth，意為“做某事的才能（天分）”。如：

He prides himself on his talent for writing. 他為自己的寫作才華感到自豪。

She showed considerable talent for getting what she wanted. 她很有天分，能夠心想事成。

有時(shí)用于反義。如：

Billy shows a remarkable talent for upsetting his sister. 比利很會(huì)惹他妹妹生氣。
