◆address n. & v.

1. 用作名詞，意為“地址”。漢語中的“你住在哪? ”在英語中不能直譯為：Where is your address? 因為此句的實際意思是“你的地址放在哪里?”(即寫有你的地址的紙條放在哪兒了?)

要表示“你住在哪?”一般說：Where do you live? 也可以說成

What’s your address?

2. 用作動詞，注意以下用法：

(1) 表示“寫地址”或“寫信給”。如：

Please address these letters. 請把這些信寫上地址。

The card was wrongly addressed to our old home. 那張明信片誤寫了我們的舊地址。

(2) 表示“向……講話”(及物)，屬正式用法。如：

The mayor addressed the crowd. 市長向群眾講話。

Address your remarks to me, please. 請把你的意見向我說吧。

(3) 用于 address oneself to, 意為“著手”、“致力于”。如：

She addressed herself to the main difficulty. 他致力地解決主要困難。

◆admire v.

1. 通常只作及物動詞，通常用于 admire (sb for) sth, 意為“因為……而欽佩或贊美某人”。如：

We admired (him for) his honesty. 人們贊美他的誠實。

I admire (him for) his success in business. 我們佩服他事業有成。

2. 其后一般不接 that 從句，但有時可接 what 從句。如：

We admire (him for ) what he has done. 我們對他所做的事很欽佩。

但不說：We admire that he is honest.

◆admit v.

1. 表示“承認”，注意以下用法：

(1) 表示“承認做了某事”，其后通常接動名詞不接不定式。如：

She admitted having seen us. 她承認看到過我們。

I admit breaking the window. 我承認打破了窗子。

表示“承認”時，有時用于 admit to, 此時的 admit為不及物動詞，但該結構中的介詞 to 常可省略，省略介詞后 admit 即為及物動詞。如：

He would never admit to being wrong. 他從不認錯。

He admitted (to) stealing. 他供認了偷盜。

(2) 有時其后接帶不定式的復合賓語，但其中的不定式通常應是 to

be。如：

She admitted him to be right. 她承認他是對的。

You must admit the task to be difficult. 你們得承認任務是艱巨的。

(3) 有時可后接從句。如：

I admit (that) I was wrong(=I admit my mistake). 我承認我錯了。

2. 表示“允許進入”、“使能進入”，可指進入某一具體場所也可指進入某一組織機構等。如：

This ticket admits one person only. 此券只準一人入場。

There were no windows to admit air. 沒有窗子可使空氣流入。

The school admits 200 students every year. 這所學校每年招收200名學生。

試比較以下兩句(注意介詞不同)。如：

She was admitted to [into] the Party. 她被吸收入黨。

She was admitted as a Party member. 她被接納為黨員。

表示“允許進入”等，也含有動態意味，所以一般不與 enter, go

in 之類的詞連用。如：

通常不說：He opened the door and admitted me to enter into the house. (可將 to enter 去掉)
