◆hospital n.

1. 表示“住院”、“進醫(yī)院”、“出院”等與住院治病有關(guān)的概念，在英國英語中不用冠詞，而在美國英語中可用冠詞。如：

After the accident, he was taken to (the) hospital. 事故發(fā)生之后，他被送進了醫(yī)院。

注：不要將“住院”直譯為 live in (the) hospital.

2. 若不是表示與“住院”有關(guān)的概念，則無論是在美國英語還是在英國英語中都必須要有冠詞。如：

我去醫(yī)院看望我兄弟。

誤：I went to hospital to see my brother.

正：I went to the hospital to see my brother.

◆hotel n.

1. 表示“在旅館”，可用介詞 in 或 at。如：

He is staying at [in] a hotel. 他住在一家旅館里。

注：漢語中說“住旅館”，英語可用 put up [stay] at (in) ahotel, 但不能按漢語習(xí)慣直譯成 live at [in] a hotel。

2. 構(gòu)成專有名詞時，通常要用定冠詞。如：the Grand Hotel(大飯店)，the Friendship Hotel(友誼賓館)，the Peace Hotel (和平飯店)，the Anchor Hotel(安克爾飯店)

注：有時可將 hotel 前置，此時也需用定冠詞。如：the HotelWaldort(沃爾多特飯店)

◆hour n.

1. 在下列情況，hour 通常要用復(fù)數(shù)形式：

(1) 表示一天中固定從事某活動(如工作、營業(yè)等)的時間。如：

Business hours are from 9 am to 5 pm. 營業(yè)時間從上午9 點到下午5點。

You mustn’t take up his time in office hours. 辦公的時候你不能占用他的時間。

類例：school hours(上課時間)，visiting hours(探視時間)，rest hours(休息時間)，banking hours(銀行營業(yè)時間)，after hours

(下班后)，out of hours(在通常工作時間之外)等。

注：work long (short, regular) hours 指“工作時間長(短，正常)”。另外，在 lunch (dinner) hour 中，hour 通常用單數(shù)。

(2) 用于24小時計時制里。如：

0000 hour(s) 午夜零點(讀作：zero hour(s))

0010 hours 凌晨零點10分(讀作：zero ten hours)

1430 hours 下午2點30分(讀作：fourteen thirty hours)

(3) 在某些習(xí)語中。如：keep early hours(早睡早起)，keep late

hours(晚睡晚起)，the small hours(下半夜，凌晨(1至4點))

2. 比較 by the hour 與 on the hour ：前者意為“按小時”或“按鐘點”，后者意為“在某一鐘點正”、“準(zhǔn)時”。如：

He was paid by the hour. 他按鐘點領(lǐng)薪。

There are flights to Boston every hour on the hour. 去波斯頓的航班每小時零分有一趟。

3. 比較 within an hour 與 within the hour：前者意為“在一小時內(nèi)”，后者指“在本小時內(nèi)”(如在3點10分說或在3點50 分前都是指在4點鐘以前)。

4. rush hour(s) 指公共汽車或營業(yè)的“高峰時間”或指上下班時的交通“擁擠時間”。

◆how adv.

1. 在某些動詞(如：know, show, discover, see, explain, find out等)之后不宜直接跟不定式，但可跟“疑問詞＋不定式”，在這類結(jié)構(gòu)中，不要忘記必要的 how(因為 how 在漢語中往往譯不出):

他會游泳。

誤：He knows to swim.

正：He knows how to swim.

誤：Can you explain to make a cake?

正：Can you explain how to make a cake?
