◆much adv.

用作副詞，主要用來修飾以下詞語：

1. 修飾形容詞或副詞的比較級。如：

It is much colder today. 今天冷得多了。

It was much worse than I thought. 比我想象的還糟得多。

注：有時可修飾最高級，但要放在定冠詞之前。如：

This is much the most important. 這是最最重要的。

2. 修飾被動結構中的過去分詞(也可用very much)。如：

The car was (very) much damaged. 汽車損壞十分嚴重。

He was (very) much shocked by the news. 他聽到這消息感到非常震驚。

3. 修飾副詞 too(太)。如：

It’s much too expensive. 這太貴了。

The book is much too difficult. 這本書太難了。

4. 修飾介詞短語。如：

He is much like his father. 他很像他父親。

Much to our surprise, he left without saying goodbye. 使我們大為驚奇的是，他竟沒打個招呼就走了。

5. 修飾動詞，通常只用于否定句或疑問句中，不能用于肯定句中(除非其前有 very, too, so 等之類的修飾語)。如：

He wants to see the film very much. 他很想看這部電影。

注意以下各正誤句型:

正：He doesn’t like her much. (用于否定句，對)

正：He doesn’t much like her. (用于否定句，對)

正：Does he like her much?(用于疑問句，對)

正：Does he much like her?(用于疑問句，對)

正：He likes her very [too, so] much. (有修飾語，對)

誤：He likes her much. /He much likes her. (用于肯定句，無 修飾語，錯)

注：單個的 much 有時也能在肯定句中修飾動詞。但這類動詞只限于 regret, admire, prefer, appreciate 等個別動詞，且只能放在句中，不可放在句末。如：

正：We much appreciate your invitation. 我們非常感激你的 邀請。

誤：We appreciate your invitation much. (若改用 very much 則完全可以)

6. 比較 much too & too much：兩者結構相似，很容易混淆。它們在用法上的區別是：much too＝too, 但前者語氣更強；too much＝much, 但前者語氣更強。如：

He drives much too fast. 他開車開得太快了。

The shoes are much too small for me. 這鞋子我穿太小了。

There is too much rain. 雨水太多了。

You have given me too much. 你已經給我太多了。

◆must v.

1. 表示“必須”、“一定要”，用法注意：

(1) 可用于肯定句、否定句或疑問句；用于否定句時，mustn’t 意為“一定不要”、“(可)不能”。如：

You must finish it today. 你一定要在今天完成它。

Cars mustn’t park here. 小汽車不準停在這里。

Must you go so soon? 你一定得這么早就走嗎?

注：回答 must 引起的一般疑問句，如果要作否定回答，一般是用 needn’t(不能用 mustn’t)。如：

A：Must I go there today? 我必須今天去嗎?

B：Yes, you must. 是的，你必須今天去。

B：No, you needn’t. 不，你不必今天去。

(2) 含有 must 的陳述句，其反意問句有兩種可能：若 must 表示“必須”，反意問句用 mustn’t；若 must 表示“有必要”，反意問句用 needn’t, 但是由于在沒有上下文的情況下，很難分清 must 是表示“必須”還是表示“有必要”，所以有時兩者都可用。如：

You must go there at once, needn’t [mustn’t] you? 你必須(有必要)馬上去那兒，不是嗎?
