242.  repeat  to say or write sth again or more than once.

243. reply   to say or write sth as an answer to sb/sth.

[v that] The senator replied that he was not in a position to comment.

244. report

(1) to give people information about sth that you have heard, seen, done, etc. This pattern is only used in the passive.

Employers reported that graduates were deficient in writing and problem-solving skills.

(2) to present a written or spoken account of an event in a newspaper, on television, etc.

[v that] It was reported that several people had been arrested.

The TV news reported that several people had been arrested.

(3) be reported  used to show that sth has been stated, and you do not know if it is true or not.

[vn that] It was reported that changes were being considered.

245. report back  to give sb information about sth that they have asked you to find out about.

[v that] They reported back that no laws had actually been broken.

246. represent  (formal) to make a formal statement to sb in authority to make your opinions known or to protest.

[v that] It was held that he had impliedly represented that he had no reason to disbelieve the clock.

247. request  (formal) to ask for sth or ask sb to do sth in a polite or formal way.

[v that] She requested that no one be told of her decision until the next meeting.

(BrE also) She requested that no one should be told of her decision.  

248. require

(1) (not usually used in the progressive tenses) (formal) to need sth; to depend on sb/sth.

[v that] The situation required that he be present.

(BrE also) The situation required that he should be present. 

(2) [often passive] to make sb do or have sth, especially because it is necessary according to a particular law or set of rules.

[v that] We require that you comply with the following rules:…

249. resolve 

(1) to make a firm decision to do sth.

[v (that) ] She resolved (that) she would never see him again. 

(2) (of a committee, meeting, etc.) to reach a decision by means of a formal vote.

[v that] It was resolved that the matter be referred to a higher authority.

250. respond  (rather formal) to give a spoken or written answer to sb/sth.

[v that] When asked about the company’s future, the director responded that he remained optimistic.

251. retort  to reply quickly to a comment, in an angry, offended or humorous way.

[v that] Sam retorted that it was my fault as much as his.

252. reveal     to make sth known to sb

[v (that) ] The report reveals (that) the company made a loss of £20 million last year.

[vn (that) ] It was revealed that important evidence had been suppressed. 

253. rule  to give an official decision about sth.

[v that] The court ruled that the women were unfairly dismissed.

[vn that] Eventually, it was ruled that if, when the race was stopped, a driver was still running, he could re-start in his original car.

But earlier this year, the college authorities ruled that men should be admitted from next term.

254. satisfy  (not used in the progressive tenses) satisfy sb (of sth) to make sb certain sth is true or has been done.

[vn (that) ] Once I had satisfied myself (that) it was the right decision, we went ahead.

255. say 

(1) to speak or tell sb sth, using words.

[v (that) ] He said (that) his name was Sam.

[vn that] It is said that she lived to be over 100.  

(2) to express an opinion on sth.

[v (that) ] I can’t say I blame her for resigning (= I think she was right)

I say (= suggest) we go without them.

I wouldn’t say they were rich (= in my opinion they are not rich)

That’s not to say it’s a bad movie (= it is good but it is not without faults)

(3) [no passive] to suggest or give sth as an example or a possibility.

[v (that) ] Say you lose your job: what would you do then?

(4) [no passive] (of sth that is written or can be seen) to give particular information or instructions.

[v (that) ] The instructions say (that) we should leave it to set for four hours.
