◆choose v.

1. 表示“選擇”，可以帶雙賓語。如：

He chose me a nice present. /He chose a nice present for me. 他為我選了件漂亮的禮物。

比較以下帶復合賓語的情形以及其相關句型：

They chose me chairman. /They chose me as [for] chairman. /They chose me to be chairman. 他們選我當主席。

2. 表示在兩者之間選擇用介詞 between, 表示在三者之間選擇用介詞 among(有時也用其它介詞)。如：

He had to choose between death and dishonour. 他必須在死亡和屈辱之間作出選擇。

He chose three among [from, out of] these books. 他從這些書中挑選了三本。

注意下面動詞 choose 后的介詞一般不能省去：

這些書可供你選擇。

正：Here are some books for you to choose from [among].

誤：Here are some books for you to choose.

3. 后可接不定式，可表示“決定”、“寧愿”。如：

He chose to go with us. 他決定同我們一起去。

He didn’t choose to marry her. 他不愿同她結婚。

He chose not to tell her. 他決定不告訴她。

◆Christmas n.

1. 表示“在圣誕節(jié)”有兩種說法：at Christmas, on Christmas Day(注意兩者在搭配上的差異)。如：

We had a good time at Christmas. 我們圣誕節(jié)過得很愉快。

We had a party on Christmas Day. 圣誕節(jié)我們開了個晚會。

注：Christmas Eve 指“圣誕節(jié)前夕”或“圣誕夜”，其前也用介詞 on。如：

I had a good time on Christmas Eve. 圣誕夜我過得很愉快。

2. “圣誕快樂”不僅可說 Merry Christmas, 而且也能像 Happy

New Year(新年快樂)那樣使用形容詞 happy。如：

A：Happy Christmas. 圣誕快樂。

B：And the same to you. 圣誕快樂。

◆church n.

1. 表示某座具體的“教堂”，是可數(shù)名詞，且可連用冠詞。如：

Walk along until you get to the church. 往前走，一直走到教堂。

2. 表示與教堂有關的活動，即“禮拜”或“禮拜儀式”等，是不可數(shù)名詞，且不與冠詞連用。如：

They are in [at] church. 他們在做禮拜。

Church is [begins] at nine. 禮拜九點開始。

How often do you go to church? 你隔多久去做一次禮拜?

cinema n.

1. 表示“電影院”，為可數(shù)名詞。如：

There are three cinemas in this town. 該鎮(zhèn)有三家電影院。

2. 表示“電影”，不可數(shù)，其前通常用定冠詞。如：

Let’s go to the cinema. 我們去看電影吧。

He enjoys going to the cinema. 他喜歡看電影。

注：cinema 表示“電影”，側重指電影的放映，而不指電影片子，表示后者通常用 film。

◆clever adj.

1. 表示“聰明的”、“靈巧的”，注意其后搭配的介詞。如：

He is clever at painting. 他擅長繪畫。

She is clever with hands. 她手很靈巧。

2. 比較：

It was clever of you to think of that. /You were cleverto think of that. 你想到了那一點，真是聰明。

◆close v. & adj.

1. 用作動詞，意為“關閉”；而用作形容詞，意為“接近”、“親近”。不要受動詞用法的影響，用其表示“關閉的”這一意義（要表示此義，要用其過去分詞形式。如：

這博物館星期日不開放。

誤：The museum is close (to visitors) on Sundays.

正：The museum is closed (to visitors) on Sundays.

正：The museum closes (to visitors) on Sundays.

順便一提，close 的反義詞 open 則與之不同，它既可以用作動詞表示“開”，也可用作形容詞表示“開著的”。如：

他叫我們閉著(睜著)眼睛。

誤：He told us to keep our eyes close (opened).

正：He told us to keep our eyes closed (open).
