19. effort 努力

表示“做某事的努力”，其后通常接不定式。如：

Many countries are making a strong effort to reduce pollution. 許多國家在下大力氣減少污染。

Many airlines now offer substantial discounts in an effort to remain competitive. 許多航空公司為了保持競爭力而提供相當大的折扣。

有時也接at doing sth。如：

His efforts to find [at finding] his daughter failed. 他設法要找到他女兒的努力失敗了。

20. fortune 運氣，命運

表示“做某事的運氣（命運）”，其后通常接不定式。如：

Then he had the bad fortune to fall ill. 后來他不幸生病了。

He had the fortune to escape being punished. 他逃脫了懲罰，真是幸運。

I had the good fortune to work with people I liked. 我很幸運，可以與我喜歡的人一起工作。

21. failure 失敗；沒做到

用于failure to do sth，表示“沒做成某事”。如：

I am puzzled by his failure to reply to my letter. 他不給我回信使我百思不解。

His failure to react quickly enough caused the crash. 他由于反應不夠迅速而導致了撞車。

Failure to say “No” may, by implication, be taken to mean “Yes”. 沒表示否定，其含義可能理解為是肯定的。

22. freedom 自由

表示“做某事的自由”，其后通常接不定式。如：

He enjoyed complete freedom to do as he wished. 他享有完全按照自己的意愿行事的自由。

The freedom to wear trousers became a symbol of women’s liberation. 有穿褲子的自由成為婦女解放運動的標志。

23. impatience 耐心

表示“急于做某事”，其后通常接不定式。如：

We noted her impatience to begin. 我們注意到她急著想開始。

She was bursting with impatience to tell Natalia what had happened. 她急不可待地想要告訴納塔利婭所發生的事情。

He was already half an hour late which explains his impatience to leave. 他已經晚了半個小時，所以他焦急地要離開。

24. impulse 沖動，念頭

表示“做某事的沖動（念頭）”，其后通常接不定式。如：

I had an impulse to hit him. 我突然想揍他。

We had a sudden impulse to go to the movies. 我們突然想去看電影。

He had an impulse to run, but he kept on walking. 他有種沖動想跑，然而他繼續走著。

24. inclination 傾向；意愿

表示“做某事的傾向（意愿）”，其后通常接不定式。如：

He has an inclination to stoutness / to be fat. 他有發福[發胖]的趨勢。

The car has an inclination to stall on cold mornings. 這輛汽車天冷時早晨常常熄火。

I have little inclination to listen to you all evening. 我可不愿意一晚上都聽你說話。
