◆attempt v. & n.

表示“企圖”、“試圖”、“嘗試”等，可用作動詞或名詞：

1. 用作動詞，其后可接不定式或動名詞作賓語（但用不定式比用動名詞常見)。如：

He attempted to leave but was stopped. 他試圖要走，但被攔住了。

比較以下同義句型(注意后接名詞的情形)：

囚犯企圖逃跑，但沒有成功。

正：The prisoner attempted to escape, but failed.

正：The prisoner attempted an escape, but failed.

他沒有企圖回答最后一個問題。

正：He didn’t attempt to answer the last question.

正：He didn’t attempt the last question.

2. 用作名詞，其后通常接不定式或介詞 at。如：

He failed in his attempt to finish [at finishing] it in

time. 他企圖要及時完成它，沒失敗了。

He made an attempt to win [at winning] the first prize. 他試圖要獲頭獎。

◆attention n.

1. 表示“注意”、“專心”等，是不可數名詞，因此不能與不定冠詞連用，也沒有復數形式。如：

Pay great attention to these points. 要特別注意這幾點。

He talked loudly, but no one paid him any attention. 他大聲說話，但沒有聽他。

2. 在 pay attention to, give attention to, bring attention

to 等結構中的 to 是介詞，所以若接動詞，應用動名詞。如：

We should pay more attention to uniting and working with

the comrades who differ with us. 我們應該更注意團結那些與自己意見不同的同志工作。

He gives all his attention to making money. 他的注意力完全集中在賺錢上。

3. 口語常用句：

May [Could] I have your attention, please? 請各位注意。

Attention, please. 請注意。

◆aunt & uncle n.

1. 可用于稱呼，可單獨使用，也可與教名連用。如：

Hi, Aunt (Uncle)! 姑姑(叔叔)，你好!

Aunt Mary is my mother’s sister. 瑪麗姑媽是我母親的妹妹。

Take me with you, Uncle Jack. 杰克叔叔，帶我一起去吧。

2. 注意以下表達：

(1) Uncle Sam 意為“山姆大叔”，是美國或美國人的綽號。

比較: John Bull 意為“約翰牛”，是英國或英國人的綽號。

(2) Uncle Tom, 意為“湯姆大伯”，指與白人交往且竭力討好白人的黑人，常帶有貶義。

◆average n.，adj. & v.

1. 用作名詞，有兩個主要意思：

(1) 表示“平均”、“平均數”。如：

The average of 2，4 and 6 is 4. 2，4，6 的平均數是4。

An average of 10 students are absent each day. 平均每天有10個學生缺席。

(2) 表示“普通”、“標準”、“平常”。如：

These marks are well above (below) average. 這些分數遠在平均分數之上(下)。

(3) 用于 on average, on an [the] average, 意為“平均起來”、“在一般情況下”。如：

On (the) average he works eight hours a day. 他平均每工作八小時。

He smokes 20 cigarettes a day on an average. 他平均每天要抽20支煙。

2. 用作形容詞，也有兩個主要意思：

(1) 表示“平均的”，通常只用作定語。如：
