3. 用于 be supposed to, 意為“應該”、“理應”,其后接動詞原形(有時為進行式或完成式)。如: You are supposed to be there before dark. 你應該在天黑前趕到那兒。 He’s supposed to be doing his homework at home now. 他現在應該在家里做作業。 He is supposed to have written us a letter. 他本來應該給我們寫封信的。 注:用于否定句,有時表示委婉地禁止,意為“不應當”、“不可”、“不許”。如: You’re not supposed to smoke in here. 此地不準吸煙。 另外請比較: 他們本來應該在一小時以前趕到這兒的。 正:They were supposed to be here an hour ago. 正:They are supposed to have been here an hour ago. 4. 用來表示條件(相當于連詞 if),意為“假設”,也可用 -ing的形式,若語氣不肯定,有時還可用虛擬語氣。試比較: 假若他不來,那我們怎么辦? 正:Suppose [Supposing] he is absent, what shall we do? 正:Suppose [Supposing] he was absent, what should we do? 5. 用來表示建議,意為“……吧”、“……怎么樣”,后接從句時可用現在時態或過去時態,相比之下用過去時語氣更委婉。如: Suppose we have [had] a rest. 我們休息一會兒吧。 Suppose we start [started] tomorrow. 我們明天動身吧。 ◆sure adj. 1. 表示“一定”或“確信”,通常用作表語。其后可接: (1) 不定式,表示說話人的看法,意為“一定會”。如: He’s sure to win (agree). 他一定會成功(同意)。 (2) of (doing) sth 或 that / whether從句,表示句子主語的信念,意為“確信”、“自信”。如: He is sure of success (winning). 他確信能成功(贏)。 I’m not sure (whether) I’ll be able to come. 我不敢肯定是否能來。 注:有時后接介詞 about。如: I’m not sure about it. 我對此沒有把握。 2. 用于 Be sure (not) to do sth. (一定要或不要做某事)。如: Be sure not to forget it. 千萬別忘記啦。 Be sure to turn off the light when you go to bed. 上床睡覺時一定要關燈。 3. 用于 for certain, 意為“肯定地”、“確切地”等。如: No one knows for certain what happened to her. 沒有確切地知道她出了什么事。 4. 用于 make certain, 意為“弄清楚”、“弄得有把握”。如: Make sure of the time. 把時間弄清楚。 You must make sure that you have enough money. 你必須要確保有足夠的錢。 ◆surprise v. & n. 1. 用作動詞,通常是及物動詞,意為“使驚奇”,通常以“人”作賓語,或用被動形式(其實是系表結構)。如: What he said surprised everyone. 他說的話使大家很驚奇。 I was greatly surprised to hear [at hearing] she was in prison. 聽說她坐牢了,我大吃一驚。 I was surprised at you (the news). 我對你的舉止(聽到這個消息)感到吃驚。 We were surprised that he didn’t come to the party. 我們對他沒來參加晚會感到很意外。 2. 用作名詞,表示一般意義的“驚奇”、“吃驚”,是不可數名詞;表示具體意義的“使人驚奇的事或東西”,是可數名詞。如: His face showed surprise at the news. 他聽到這個消息臉上露出吃驚的神色。 What a surprise to see you here! 真想不到在這里見到你! We had some unpleasant surprises. 我們得到了一些令人不愉快的意外消息。 注意以下各句與介詞的有用搭配: He stood up in surprise. 他驚奇地站起來。 Their visit took us by surprise. 他們的來訪使我們感到很意外。 To my surprise, the plan succeeded. 使我吃驚的是,這個計劃竟然成功了。 |
