◆spend v.

1. 表示“花費”，其主語只能是人，不能是事或物；其賓語可以是時間或金錢，表示在某一方面花錢或花時間，通常用 on sth 或用(in) doing sth。如：

He spend much time (money) on books. 他花了很多時間讀(很多錢買)書。

She spent most of her life (in) writing the book. 她花了大半輩子寫這本書。

以下幾點用法須注意：

(1) 以上 in doing sth 中的介詞 in 在口語中通常可以省略，但是若其后接的不是動名詞，而是表示動作意義的名詞，則此介詞不能省略。如：

We spent two hours in discussion. 我們花了兩小時來討論。

(2) 有時也可后接 for sth /on doing sth(尤指花錢時)。如：

She spent a lot of money on [for] clothes. 她花了很多錢買衣服。

He spends a lot of money on [in] entertaining friends. 他把許多錢花在招待朋友上。

(3) 在美國英語中有時還可后接不定式（尤其是用于花錢或花精力等時)。如：

But your government has spent a lot of money to send you over to study. 可你們的政府已花了很多錢送你們來學習。

They spent great efforts to help us. 他們花了很大的精力來幫助我們。

2. 用于比喻義，表示“消耗”、“用完”。如：

The storm soon spent its force. 暴風雨很快就停了下來。

I’ve spent all my energy on this. 我對此事已嘔心嚦血。

3. 表示“度過”。如：

Come and spend the weekend with us. 來和我們一起過周末吧。

◆square n. & adj.

1. 用作名詞，表示“正方形”或“廣場”等，用于專有名詞時，其前通常不用冠詞。如：

Tian An Men Square 天安門廣場 George Square 喬治廣場

He lives at (No) 82 Green Square. 他住格林廣場82號。

例外：the Red Square 紅場

2. 用作形容詞，表示“方的”、“平方的”等，在表示面積時經常用到它。如：

144 square inches equals 1 square foot. 144平方英寸等于1平方英尺。

注意以下兩句詞序不同，含義不同:

The room is five square metres. 這個房間5平方米。

The room is five metres square. 這個房間5米見方(即25平方米)。

再看一例:

A board 4 feet square contains 16 square feet. 4英尺見方的木板面積為16平方英尺。
