2. 表示抽出時間做某事，其后可接不定式的復合結構。如；

Can you spare the time to help me? 你能抽出時間來幫我嗎?

Can you spare me 10 minutes to discuss this problem? 你能抽出10分鐘來討論這個問題嗎?

2. 用作形容詞，指“多余的”、“空閑的”、“備用的”。如：

He teaches himself English in his spare time. 他在業余時間自學英語。

If you have a spare bed, may I stay tonight? 如果你有空床的話，今晚我可以留下嗎?

Do you carry a spare wheel in your car? 你的汽車上有備用車輪嗎?

◆specially adv.

1. 表示“特別地”，用于形容詞或副詞前，強調程度。如：

The boy is specially clever. 這男孩特別聰明。

有時也修飾動詞。如：

I specially want to visit the farm. 我特別想參觀這個農場。 2. 用于強調目的，意為“特意”、“專門”，通常與表目的的不定式或介詞 for 短語連用。如：

He came here specially to see her. 他專程來看她。

I made this specially for your birthday. 這是我特意為你的生日而做的。

◆speech n.

1. 表示說話的能力、行為、方式等，通常為不可數名詞。如：

In some stories animals have speech. 在有些故事里動物會說話。

2. 泛指一般意義的話語、言語等，也是不可數名詞。如：

Speech was impossible with so much noise around. 周圍這么吵，簡直沒法說話。

He tried to put his thoughts into speech. 他竭力想用言語來表達他的思想。

3. 表示“報告”、“演說”等，通常是可數名詞。如：

She gave [made] a speech to the college students. 她給大學生作了演講。

I’ve got to give [make] a speech and I’m a bit nervous about it. 我要作個報告，我對此還有點緊張。

◆speed n.

用作名詞，表法“速度”，注意與介詞 at 和 with 的搭配：

1. 與介詞 at 連用時，通常可用 full, top, low, high, half, safe, slow, different, express, ordinary 等形容詞修飾。如：

Please drive at a safe speed. 請以安全速度行駛。

The plane came to land at a low speed. 飛機低速著陸。

We were moving at full speed (at different speeds). 我們以全速(不同速度)前進。

2. 與介詞 with 連用時，通常可用 all, great, good, surprising等修飾。如：

It moved with great speed. 它很快地移動。

The dispute was settled with surprising speed. 那場爭端以驚人的速度獲得解決。

注：以上區別只是大致的，混用的情況有時也是可能的。

3. 在 at a [the] speed of (以……的速度)這一結構中，總是用介詞 at。如：

He drove at a speed of 40 miles an hour. 他以每小時40 英里的速度駕車行駛。

Can the plane fly at the speed of sound? 這飛機能以音速飛行嗎?
