      126. forget 

      (1) (not usually used in the progressive tenses) to be unable to remember sth that has happened in the past or information that you knew in the past.

      [v (that) ] She keeps forgetting (that) I’m not a child any more.

      [vn that] It should not be forgotten that people used to get much more exercise.

      (2) to deliberately stop thinking about sb/sth.

      [v (that) ]After a while you’ll forget you’re wearing contact lenses.

      127. forewarn   (formal) to warn sb about sth bad or unpleasant before it happens.

      [vn that] It was only fair to forewarn him that Rick’s arrest, let alone his trial and conviction, were by no means a foregone conclusion.

      128. fret  (especially BrE) to be worried or unhappy and not able to relax.

      [v that] Worried parents fretted that their children would be exposed to X-rated happenings.

      129. gamble    to take a risk with sth, hoping that you will be successful.

      [v that] She gambled that Las Vegas would be the place to show her hand.

      130. gather  (not used in the progressive tenses) to believe or understand that sth is true because of information or evidence you have.

      [v (that) ] I gather (that) you wanted to see me.

      131.get out  to become known.

      132. go    used to talk about what tune or words a song or poem has or what happens in a story.

      133. grant  to admit that sth is true, although you may not like or agree with it.

      [vn (that) ] I grant you (that) it looks good, but it’s not exactly practical.

      [v that]  I grant that your explanation is reasonable.

      134. grasp   to understand sth completely.

      [v that] It took him some time to grasp that he was now a public figure.

      135. groan  (informal) to complain.

      [v that]He thought of Fantina’s little face, and groaned that her eyes might see the sordid, futile world that he had to enter to work and survive.

      136. grouse  (informal) to complain about sb/sth in a way that other people find annoying.

      137. grumble  to complain about sb/sth in a bad-tempered way.

      138. guarantee 

      (1) to promise to do sth; to promise sth will happen.

      (2) to be certain that sth will happen.

      [v (that) ]You can guarantee (that) the children will start being naughty as soon as they have to go to bed.

      (3) to agree to be legally responsible for sth or for doing sth.

      [v that] I guarantee that he will appear in court.

      139. guess

      (1) to try and give an answer or make a judgement about sth without being sure of all the facts.

      [v (that) ] I’d guess that she’s about 30.

      (2) to find the right answer to a question or the truth without knowing all the facts.

      [v (that) ] You would never guess (that) she had problems. She’s always so cheerful.

      (3) (informal, especially NAmE) to suppose that sth is true or likely.

      [v (that) ] I guess (that) you’ll be looking for a new job now. 

      140. hallucinate   to see or hear things that are not really there because of illness or drugs.

      [v (that) ] Many hallucinated that they were shrinking or else expanding to fill it.

      On the screen a taker of LSD, the Vision-of-Hell-drug, was borne off on a stretcher, after having hallucinated he could fly.

      141. hazard  to make a suggestion or guess which you know may be wrong.

      142. hear  to be told about sth.

      [v (that) ] I was surprised to hear (that) he was married.

      143. hint  to suggest sth in an indirect way.

      [v (that) ] They hinted (that) there might be more job losses.

      144. hit   (informal) to come suddenly into your mind.

      [v that] It wasn’t until the final two weeks of term that it really hit me that I was actually going to have to go.

      145. hold  (formal) to consider that sth is true.

      [v that] I still hold that the government’s economic policies are mistaken.
