      274. submit   (law or formal) to say or suggest sth.

      275. suggest 

      (1) to put forward an idea or a plan for other people to think about.

      [v (that) ] I suggest (that) we go out to eat.

      [vn that] It has been suggested that bright children take their exams early. (BrE also) It has been suggested that bright children should take their exams early.

      (2) to put an idea into sb’s mind; to make sb think that sth is .

      [v (that) ] All the evidence suggests (that) he stole the .

      (3) to state sth indirectly.

      [v (that) ] Are you suggesting (that) I’m lazy? 

      276. suppose 

      (1) to think or believe that sth is true or possible (based on the knowledge that you have)

      [v (that) ] I don’t suppose for a minute that he’ll agree (= I’m sure that he won’t)

      Why do you suppose he resigned?

      There is no reason to suppose she’s lying.

      I suppose you think it’s funny, do you? (= showing anger) (That’ is nearly always left out, especially in speech.)

      (2) to pretend that sth is true; to imagine what would happen if sth were true.

      Let us suppose, for example, that you are married with two children. 

      (3) used to make a statement, request or suggestion less direct or less strong.

      (1) [no passive] to make a serious promise to do sth.

      [v (that) ] I swear (that) I’ll never leave you. (‘That’ is usually left out, especially in speech.)

      (2) to make a public or official promise, especially in court:.

      [v that] Are you willing to stand up in court and swear that you don’t recognize him? 

      281. teach  to make sb feel or think in a different way.

      282. tell 

      (1) to give information to sb by speaking or writing:.

      [vn (that) ] They’ve told us (that) they’re not coming.

      (2) (of some writing, an instrument, a sign, etc.) to give information about sth.

      [vn (that) ] The sound of his breathing told her (that) he was asleep.

      (3) to order or advise sb to do sth.

      [vn (that) ] The doctor told me (that) I should eat less fat.

      (4) (not used in the progressive tenses) to know, see or judge sth correctly.

      [v (that) ] I could tell (that) he was angry from his expression. 

      283. testify

      (1) to make a statement that sth happened or that sth is true, especially as a witness in court.

      [v (that) ] He testified (that) he was at the theatre at the time of the murder. 

      (2) to say that you believe sth is true because you have evidence of it.

      [v (that) ]  The full ashtrays testify that smoking hasn’t been stubbed out.

      284. theorize    to suggest facts and ideas to explain sth; to form a theory or theories about sth.

      [v that] He theorized that she went into a shop and lashed out a bob or two on something like a tin of baked beans.

      285.think 

      (1) (not used in the progressive tenses) to have a particular idea or opinion about sth/sb; to believe sth.

      [v (that) ] Do you think (that) they’ll come?

      I thought I heard a scream.

      [vn (that) ] It was once thought that the sun travelled around the earth. 

      (2) to expect sth.

      [v (that) ] I never thought (that) I’d see her again.

      The job took longer than we thought.

      You’d think she’d have been grateful for my help (= but she wasn’t)

      (3) used in questions to show that you are angry or surprised.

      [v (that) ]What do you think you’re doing?
