E 用在某些表示海洋、河流、群島、山脈、沙漠、地區(qū)等專有名稱以及本身為復(fù)數(shù)形式的國名之前：

the Atlantic大西洋

the Netherlands荷蘭

the Thames泰晤士河

the Sahara撒哈拉沙漠

the Azores亞速爾群島

the Crimea克里米亞半島

the Alps阿爾卑斯山

the Riviera里維埃拉

用在某些其他地名之前：

the City倫敦金融區(qū)

the Mall英國倫敦圣詹姆斯公園林陰道

the Sudan蘇丹

The Hague海牙

the Strand (倫敦）河濱路

the Yemen也門

專有名稱由名詞+of+名詞組成時(shí)前面也用the：

the Bay of Biscay比斯開灣

the Cape of Good Hope好望角

the Gulf of Mexico墨西哥灣

the United States of America美利堅(jiān)合眾國

the可用在由形容詞+名詞組成的名稱之前 (但形容詞一般應(yīng)不是east，west等詞）：

the Arabian Gulf阿拉伯灣

the New Forest新森林 (位于英格蘭南岸的部分森林地區(qū)）

the High Street正街，主街

the用在由east / west等形容詞+名詞構(gòu)成的某些特定名稱之前：

the East / West End倫敦東 / 西區(qū)

the East / West Indies東 / 西印度群島

the North / South Pole北 / 南極

但在下列情況下一般不用the：

South Africa南非

North America北美洲

West Germany西德

但是，當(dāng)east / west等詞用做名詞時(shí)，前面要用the：

the north of Spain西班牙北部

the Middle East中東

the West (geographical）西部 (地理上的）

the West (political）西方 (政治上的）

比較Go north (north在這里是副詞，指向北的方向）和 He

lives in the north (north在這里是名詞，指北方的一個(gè)地區(qū)）。
