9. another

(1) 主要用法：another主要有兩個(gè)用法，一是表示“另外一個(gè)”，即暗指除這個(gè)之外的另外一個(gè)，具有不確指性。如：

You’d better try and find another job. 你最好設(shè)法另找一份工作。

此句的背景是：“你”現(xiàn)在有一份工作，或已找到一份工作，但由于某種原因不想做，所以要另找一份工作。這里說(shuō)的“另外一份工作”指的就是“除此之外的另外一份工作”。

another的另一個(gè)用法是表示“增加的”“額外的”，暗指在原有基礎(chǔ)上另增加一個(gè)。如：

Could I have another piece of bread? 我可以再吃一塊面包嗎?

此句的背景是：“我”原來(lái)已吃了一些面包，現(xiàn)在還想吃一塊，即在原來(lái)的基礎(chǔ)上再額外增加一塊。

(2) 語(yǔ)法特點(diǎn)：another后原則只用于指代或修飾單數(shù)可數(shù)名詞，不用于指代或修飾不可數(shù)名詞或復(fù)數(shù)名詞，但有一個(gè)例外，就是當(dāng)復(fù)數(shù)名詞前帶有數(shù)詞或few修飾時(shí)，其前可以用another修飾。如：

We need another three chairs. 我們還需要三把椅子。

You’d better stay at hospital for another few days. 你最好在醫(yī)院再住幾天。

英語(yǔ)不能說(shuō)another chairs，但可說(shuō)another three chairs；不能說(shuō)another days，但可說(shuō)another few days，原因就是復(fù)數(shù)名詞chairs, days前帶有修飾語(yǔ)three和few。

10. other與others

(1) 從是否確指來(lái)看：other和others均表示不確指意義，其中other后可以修飾名詞，而others后不能再接名詞，兩者的關(guān)系可描述為：others=other+復(fù)數(shù)名詞。如：

He never thinks of others. 他從來(lái)不為別人著想。

I don’t like these books. Show me some others. 我不喜歡這些書(shū)，再拿一些給我看。

第一句中的others=other people，意為“其他人”“別人”，泛指其他所有人；第二句中的others=other books，意為“其他的書(shū)”。

但是，若要表示確指意義，我們就在other和others前面使用定冠詞，同樣地，other后可以修飾名詞，而others后不能再接名詞，兩者的關(guān)系仍然存在the others=the other+復(fù)數(shù)名詞。如：

I started last in the race but I soon caught up with the others. 我在賽跑中最后一個(gè)起跑，但不久就趕上了其他人。

句中的the others=the other people，意為“其他人”，其中的定冠詞特指參加賽跑的所有其他人。

注意：the other后除接復(fù)數(shù)名詞外，還可以接單數(shù)名詞，此時(shí)不能用the others代替。如：

This seat is free; the other seat is taken. 這個(gè)座位空著，那個(gè)座位有人。

(2) 常用慣用表達(dá)

①one...the other表示“(兩者中的)一個(gè)……另一個(gè)……”。如：

What I say goes in at one ear and out at the other. 我說(shuō)話(huà)他是一只耳朵進(jìn)，另一只耳朵出。

②one...the others表示“(好幾個(gè)中的)一個(gè)……其余都……”。如：

Of their five children, one is in China and the others are abroad. 他們有五個(gè)小孩，一個(gè)在中國(guó)，其余的都在國(guó)外。

注：若為三者，想要表示“一個(gè)……另一個(gè)……剩下的一個(gè)……”，可用one...another...the other [the third...]；若為四者，可用one...another...another [a third]...the other [the fourth, the last]。
