習慣上后接of doing sth的名詞

英語中有些名詞通常后接of doing sth，而不接不定式（至少在用于某些結構或表示某些特定意思時不接不定式）。這類名詞比較常見的有：

1. act 動作，行為

用于the act of doing sth，其字面意思是“做某事的動作”，通常只需譯為“做某事”即可（但譯文要考慮符合漢語的表達習慣）。如：

For Jane, the act of writing was always difficult. 寫東西對簡來說一直很難。

The very act of writing out your plan clarifies what you need to do. 把計劃書寫出來就會使你清楚自己該做什么。

Two politicians who hated each other shook hands as an overt act of showing they are now friendly. 兩位敵對的政治家握手言和，顯然是要表明他們現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)友好了。

用于in the act of doing sth，意為“正在做某事時”。如：

He was in the very act of starting. 他正準備動身。

In the act of bending down, he slipped and hurt his back. 他一彎腰滑倒了，跌傷了背。

The thief was apprehended by the police in the act of stealing a car. 竊賊在偷汽車時當場被警察抓住。

2. aim 目的

后接of doing sth，意為“做某事的目的”，主要用于with the aim of doing sth這一結構中。如：

She went to London with the aim of finding a job. 她去倫敦是為了找工作。

The leaflet has been produced with the aim of increasing public awareness of the AIDS. 印發(fā)這些傳單的目的在于提高公眾對艾滋病的意識。

3. danger 危險，危害

(1) 用于the danger of doing sth，表示“做某事（可能發(fā)生的）危險或危害”。如：

The children didn’t realize the danger of swimming in the river. 孩子們沒有意識到在這河里游泳的危險。

The doctor alerted me to the danger of not getting enough sleep. 醫(yī)生提醒我注意睡眠不足的危害。

You can minimize the danger of driving at night by driving slowly and with great care. 如果你放慢車速，多加小心，就能把夜間駕駛的危險性降到最低。

(2) 用于 there is a (no) danger of doing sth，表示“有（沒有）發(fā)生某情況的危險”。如：

There is no danger of being seen or caught. 沒有被發(fā)現(xiàn)或被捉住的危險。

The dam has been breached and there is a danger of flooding. 大壩已經(jīng)決口了，有發(fā)生洪水的危險。

(3) 用于in danger of doing sth，表示“有發(fā)生某情況的危險”。如：

He was in danger of losing his life. 他有喪失性命的危險。

The whale is in danger of becoming extinct. 鯨類有滅絕的危險。

注：有時后接in doing sth，表示在做某事過程中的危險，其中的in與when, while同義。如：

Is there any danger in climbing the tree? 爬這樹有危險嗎？

4. distinction非凡，卓越，杰出；榮譽，名聲，殊榮

用于have the distinction of doing sth，表示“做某事的榮譽或名聲”“做某事顯示出的卓越或杰出”。如：

She had the distinction of graduating first in her class. 她以班級第一的榮譽畢業(yè)。

She had the distinction of being the first woman to swim the Channel. 她卓爾不群，因為她是第一個橫渡英吉利海峽的女子。

He has the dubious distinction of being the first railway baron to go bankrupt. 他擔著首位破產鐵路大亨的名聲，這也算是種榮譽吧。
