在家庭里或在熟人之間談及自己的 father, mother 時，其前通常不用物主代詞(但通常大寫第一個字母)。如：

Why is Father out of work? 父親為什么失業了?

Mother is waiting for us. 母親在等我們。

在家庭之外談及自己的 father, mother 時，通常要使用物主代詞(但有時也省略)。如：

(My) Father used to take us to the seaside every year. (我)父親過去每年帶我們去海邊。

但是若談到別人的 father, mother, 則必須用物主代詞。如：

How is your mother? 你母親好嗎?
