◆average n.，adj. & v.

1. 用作名詞，有兩個主要意思：

(1) 表示“平均”、“平均數”。如：

The average of 2，4 and 6 is 4. 2，4，6 的平均數是4。

An average of 10 students are absent each day. 平均每天有10個學生缺席。

(2) 表示“普通”、“標準”、“平常”。如：

These marks are well above (below) average. 這些分數遠在平均分數之上(下)。

(3) 用于 on average, on an [the] average, 意為“平均起來”、“在一般情況下”。如：

On (the) average he works eight hours a day. 他平均每工作八小時。

He smokes 20 cigarettes a day on an average. 他平均每天要抽20支煙。

2. 用作形容詞，也有兩個主要意思：

(1) 表示“平均的”，通常只用作定語。如：

The average age of the students is 20. 學生的平均年齡為二十歲。

(2) 表示“一般的”、“普通的”，可用作定語也可用作表語。如：

It is just an average dictionary. 那只是本普通的詞典。

He is an average teacher. 他是個普通的教師。

3. 用作動詞，意為“平均有”、“平均為”。如：

He averages two trips a year. 他平均每年旅游兩次。

The children average 10 years of age. 這些小孩平均年齡為10歲。

◆back n. & adv.

1. 短語 at the back of 可以表示“在……的后面(范圍之外)”，此時相當于 behind；也可以表示“在……的后部(范圍之內)”，此時不能用 behind。比較：

There is a little garden at the back of the house. 房屋后有個小花園。(小花園在房屋之外)

There is a little room at the back of the house. 房屋后部有個小房間。(小房間在房屋之內)

有時也用介詞 in。如：

He sat in [at] the back of the car. 他坐在小汽車后部。

在美國英語中也可將以上兩個短語中的 at [in] the 省略，只用back of。如：

My home lies back of the school. 我家就在學校后面。

2. 通常不與那些已含有 back 含義的動詞連用。如：

半小時后他就回來了。

正：Half an hour later he returned [=came back].

誤：Half an hour later he returned back.

◆bad adj.

1. 除表示“壞的”之外，還有不少引申用法“不舒服”、“糟糕的”、“嚴重的”、“腐爛的”等。如：

He feels bad. 他感到不舒服(難過)。

He has got a bad cold. 他了患重感冒。

It’s a bad mistake (accident). 那是一個嚴重的錯誤(一次嚴重的事故)。

The fish will go bad if you don’t put it in the fridge. 這魚要是不放入冰箱就會腐爛。

2. 注意以下各句與介詞的搭配。如：

He is bad at telling stories. 他不善于講故事。

Reading in the sun is bad for you (your eyes). 在太陽下看書對你(你的眼睛)有害。

We were hoping for an improvement but things have gone from bad to worse. 我們本希望有所改善，但事情卻每況愈下。
