1. 泛指一般意義的“生活”、“生命”、“人生”等，通常是不可數(shù)名詞。如：
Life is not all fun. 人生并非總是享樂(lè)。
How did life begin? 生命是怎樣開(kāi)始的?
He doesn’t want much from life. 他對(duì)生活所求不多。
2. 表示某種方式的生活(通常有定語(yǔ)修飾)，是可數(shù)名詞( 但通常用單數(shù)形式)。如：
They have very busy lives. 他們過(guò)著繁忙的生活。
He leads a happy life in the country. 他在鄉(xiāng)下過(guò)著幸福的生活。
3. 表示一條條的生命，是可數(shù)名詞。如：
Three lives were lost in the accident. 那件意外事故使3個(gè)人喪了命。
◆light n.
1. 用作名詞，表示“光線”、“亮光”，一般為不可數(shù)名詞；表示“在……亮光下”，可用介詞 in 或 by。其區(qū)別是：用 in 通常只客觀地表示“在……亮光下”，而用 by 則暗示“憑借亮光做……”之意。如：
They went out for a walk in the moon light. 他們?cè)谠鹿庀碌酵饷嫔⒘瞬健?/SPAN>
He worked by the light of the moon. 他在月光下工作(即：憑借月光工作)。
The light is too weak to read by. 光線太暗不能看書(shū)。
2. 表示“燈”，注意搭配：
The light is [goes] out. 燈熄了。
The light is [comes, goes] on. 燈亮了。
He turns [switches, puts] on the light. 他打開(kāi)燈。
He turns [switches, puts] off the light. 他關(guān)掉燈。
3. 表示“火”，通常只指抽煙用的“火”，注意不要與 fire 弄混。如：
能借個(gè)火嗎?
誤：Have you got a fire, please?
誤：Can you give me a fire, please?
正：Have you got a light, please?
正：Can you give me a light, please?
◆lighted & lit v.
1. 從理論上說(shuō)，light 的過(guò)去式或過(guò)去分詞有兩種形式 lighted或lit。但在通常情況下 lit 比 lighted 用得更經(jīng)常。
He lit [lighted] a cigaret. 他點(diǎn)燃了一支煙。
Our streets are lit [lighted] by electricity. 我們的街道用電照明。
2. 若轉(zhuǎn)化成形容詞，則作表語(yǔ)時(shí)通常用 lit, 而作定語(yǔ)時(shí)通常用lighted。如：
The match is lit. 火柴已點(diǎn)燃了。
He was holding a lighted match. 他手里拿著根點(diǎn)燃的火柴。
注：若是放在名詞前作定語(yǔ)同時(shí)又受到一個(gè)副詞的修飾，則通常lit。如：
a badly lit street 照明很差的大街
a brightly lit reception-room 燈火通明的接待室
◆like v.
1. 用作動(dòng)詞，表示“喜歡”，后接動(dòng)詞時(shí)，用不定式或動(dòng)名詞均可，且在意義上沒(méi)有多大差別。如：
I like walking [to walk] in the rain. 我喜歡在雨中行走。
注：不定式或動(dòng)名詞前可以有邏輯主語(yǔ)。如：
我不喜歡你抽煙。
正：I don’t like you to smoke.
正：I don’t like you [your] smoking.
但是若 like 與 would, should 連用，表示“想要”、“希望”等，其后通常只接不定式，而不接動(dòng)名詞；如果是表示過(guò)去未曾實(shí)現(xiàn)的想法，其后可接不定式的完成式。如：
Would you like to come swimming with us? 你愿同我們一起去游泳嗎?
I’d like to have gone to the party last night but I hadto work extra hours to finish a report. 昨晚我本想去參加晚會(huì)的，但我要加班寫(xiě)一個(gè)報(bào)告。
