◆secret n.

1. 用作名詞，意為“秘密”；用作形容詞，意為“秘密的”。比較以下各組句子(有冠詞為名詞，沒有冠詞為形容詞)：

我不知道那是秘密。

正：I didn’t know it was a secret.

正：I didn’t know it was secret.

這事請(對他)保密。

正：Please keep it a secret (from him).

正：Please keep it secret (from him).

注：表示“對某人保密”，一般用介詞 from。如：

I have no secrets from you. 我對你毫無隱瞞。

He kept his illness secret from his family. 他沒讓他的家人知道他生病了。

2. 比較 in secret和 in the secret：前者指“秘密地”、“偷偷地”，主要用作狀語；后者指“知道秘密”、“知道內情”，主要用作表語。如：

They often meet in secret. 他們經常私下見面。

Is your father in the secret? 你父親知道內情嗎?

◆secretary n.

用作名詞，表示“秘書”、“書記”。若表示擔任某人的秘書，一般后接介詞 to；若表示擔任某組織、 機構或團體等的秘書或書記等，一般后接介詞 of。如：

He was secretary of this Party branch. 他是這個黨支部的書記。

注：用作表語、補足語或同位語等，表示一個獨一無二的職位，其前通常不用冠詞，如上例。

◆seem v.

1. 用作連系動詞，表示“似乎”、“好像”，其后用作表語的可以是名詞、形容詞、介詞短語、不定式等。如：

He seems (to be) ill. 他似乎病了。

It seemed (to be) a good idea. 那似乎是個好主意。

It seems like yesterday. 這仿佛是昨天發生的事。

注：后接不定式時，不定式根據情況可以是一般式，也可以是進行式或完成式等。如：

She seems to be crying. 她好像在哭。

He didn’t seem to have changed much. 他似乎沒多大變化。

2. 在 it seems 后可接 as if 從句或 that 從句。如：

It seems as if he is mad. 他好像是瘋了。

It seems that he likes the girl. 他好像喜歡這個女孩。

注：后接 that 從句時，有時可用 so, not 代之。如：

A：Does he know her? 他認識她嗎?

B：It seems so (not). 好像是認識(不認識)。

3. 有時還可用于 there seems (to be)。如：

There seems (to be) something wrong with it. 好像有什么問題。

◆seldom adv.

1. 用作副詞，表示“不常”、“很少”，在句中的位置一般是緊靠動詞(放在實義動詞之前，特殊動詞之后)。如：

He seldom comes late. 他很少遲到。

Mary is seldom ill. 瑪麗很少生病。

He seldom, if ever, reads a book. 他很少看書。

注：有時放在句末，此時通常有 very, quite 等修飾。如：

I see her very seldom now. 我現在極少見到她。
