◆shame n.

表示一般意義的“羞恥”、“恥辱”等，是不可數(shù)名詞；表示具體意義的“可恥的事”、“遺憾的事”等，是可數(shù)名詞( 可與不定冠詞連用，但通常不用復(fù)數(shù))。如：

He has no shame. 他不要臉。

He felt shame at having told a lie. 他因說謊而感到羞恥。

What a shame you didn’t win. 你沒有贏，真是遺憾!

It’s a great shame to treat him like that. 這樣對待他太不像話了。

share v. & n.

1. 用作動詞，表示“分配”、“分發(fā)”等，其后可接 (也可以不接)副詞 out。如：

He shared (out) $100 among [between] the five men. 他把100美元分給了這5個人。

2. 表示“分享”、“分擔(dān)”、“共用”等，若賓語為具體名詞，通常只用 share；若賓語為抽象名詞，則可在其后接(也可不接)介詞in。在其賓語后通常使用的介詞有 among, between, with 等。如：

We share a small room between us. 我們倆合用一個小房間。

I will share (in) the cost with you. 我將與你分擔(dān)費(fèi)用。

She shares (in) my troubles as well as my joys. 她與我同甘共苦。

◆sheep n.

1. 表示“綿羊”，單復(fù)數(shù)同形。如：one sheep(一只綿羊)，ten sheep(十只綿羊)。

2. 不要從字面理解以下兩短語的意思：a black sheep(害群之馬，敗家子)，the sheep and the goats(好人與壞人，能人與笨人，成功者與失敗者)。

◆shoot v.

用作動詞，表示“射擊”，比較 shoot at 與 shoot：前者表示“向……射擊或開槍”，后者表示“打中”或“打死”。如：

He shot at a bird, but missed it. 他向鳥開槍，但未打中。

He shot a bird and killed it. 他把一只鳥打死了。

He was shot three times in the leg. 他的腿中了三槍。

◆short adj.

1. 用于 short of, 意為“缺少”，主要用作表語。如：

They are short of money (time). 他們?nèi)鄙馘X(時間)。

注：有時省略其后的介詞短語。如：

We can’t lend you any money, we are a bit short (of it) ourselves. 我們無法借給你錢，我們(的錢)也不太夠。

2. 比較 in short 與 for short：前者意為“總之”，后者意為“為了簡短”或“簡稱”。如：

In short, he is a cheat. 總之，他是個騙子。

Jonathan is called Jon for short. 喬納森被簡稱為喬。

比較：Jon is short for Jonathan. 喬是喬納森的簡稱。

◆shortly adv.

1. 表示“不久”、“一會兒”等，相當(dāng)于 soon 或 in a short time, 主要用于將來。如：

He will be back shortly. 他很快就會回來。

He is shortly to leave for London. 不久他要去倫敦。

但若其后接用 after, before 等，則也用于過去。如：

He returned to work shortly after his operation. 手術(shù)后不久他就回去上班了。

The accident happened shortly before midday. 事故發(fā)生在中午前不久。

2. 表示“無禮地”、“不客氣地”。如：

He answered very shortly. 他回答得很無禮。

注：有時表示“簡短地”，但這在現(xiàn)代英語中已不常見。
