English CLAUSE(修訂本) p109上說:There is a growing tendency to omit the “that” in the object clause, especially in American usage. But the present British usage seems to be: (a) “That” is still usual with such verbs as: agree, announce, argue, assume, aver, calculate, conceive, contend, hold, indicate, learn, show, maintain, observe, decide, remark, suggest, state, intend. (b) “That” is optional with such verbs as: be told, confess, consider, declare, grant, hear, know, perceive, propose, say, see, understand, imagine, expect, reckon. (c) “That” is unusual with such verbs as: believe, dare, say, hope, presume, suppose, think, wish. Owning to the influence of American usage, verbs of class (a) are dwindling in favour of verbs of class (b) or (c) 至于每個動詞之后that的選用,詳見上面的例句。 注:(1) 當that從句作賓語時,連詞that在較短的句子中一般可以省略(見上面的例句) 但若that從句較長時;則不宜省略。例如: Now scientists warn that the unseen energy waves(能波) , “electric smog(電煙霧) ”, may be hazardous to our health. 目前科學家警告說“能波”,也叫“電煙霧”,可能對我們的健康有害。 (2) 在簡短的回答中,that不能省略。例如: — what do you assume from his attitude? — That he was frightened. (3) 由對等連接詞and或 but所連接的兩個作賓語的that從句中,第一個that可以省略,但第二個不可省略。例如:He said (that) he had eaten nothing but he was not hungry. 他說他沒吃東西,但是他不餓。 (4) 為了強調,做賓語的that從句移到句首時,that不能省略。例如:That he was guilty of any crime(↗) , we cannot believe(↘) 試比較:He was completely innocent(↘) , I believe. (此處,He was completely innocent是獨立的主句,I believe是評述分句) (5) 當that從句和其它名詞性從句并列作賓語時,that不能省略。例如: Everyone could see what was happening and that poor George was really scared..人人都能看到所發生的一切,也可看出可憐的喬治是害怕的。 (6) 當主句謂語動詞與that從句之間有插入語時,that不能省略。例如:I think, John, that you would be wiser not to go. 約翰,我認為你不去才是更聰明的了。 You don’t realize, I suppose, that I’m down and out? 你大概不知道我已經筋疲力盡了吧?
